Help with decisions about last day/night of trip in Rome

I will be flying out of Rome at the end of our 10 day trip on April22 at 10:30am.

I would like to spend the last day (Easter Monday) in Trastevere area of Rome. We have been to Rome before and seen all of the big tourist sites, but we have not been to the Trastevere location. I have three scenarios that I can't decide between. I am not sure whether to stay by the airport or in Trastevere. I am also not sure whether to return our rental car on Monday or Tuesday morning. Please weigh in with your opinion. I would also appreciate recommendations about accommodations by the airport or in Trastevere.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

1- Monday morning drive to Rome airport and return rental car. Check into hotel near FCO airport. Take train/bus into Trastevere for the day and evening. Travel back to hotel and fly out at 10:30am.

2- Monday morning drive to Trastevere and park car and check into hotel there. Spend day and night in Trastevere. Tuesday morning drive to airport and return car and fly home.

3- Monday morning drive to airport and return car. Get transport to hotel in Trastevere. Spend day and night in Trastevere. Tuesday morning get transport to airport.

  2. Nope, would not want to deal with parking on last day, too risky.
  3. if it was an early flight, I might do this, not for a 10:30 though.

We are coming from Abruzzo, but have already booked the car rental. Since we are flying in and out of Rome, I rented it to pick up and return at FCO.

Well, I think scenario 2 is least desirable. It entails driving in and out of the city proper and dealing with a rental return right before your flight… no thanks. I would almost never elect to stay at an airport hotel, and I think doing so robs you of a relaxed evening. Still, given how nuts FCO can be and that you’re not staying close to Termini (for the express train) I can see the value of an airport hotel in this case. Both are decent options.

If you need to be at FCO at 7:30, I would elect option #1. Note that the FL1 train to/from the airport stops at the Trastevere station, so you may be able to avoid Termini - and it's cheaper than the express. There is a tram that runs along Viale di Trastevere for getting between the station and the touristic area.

Or, could you change the reservation for the car and drop it at Termini? That would make an overnight stay in Trastevere more practical.
