Help with deciding on a Itenery

What is a 14 day AND 21 TOUR that would START and/or INCLUDE Rome and include Palermo as we have ancestors there? I have interest in visiting Vinace as I heard Rick Steves say it is the best preserved city in Italy, AND any nice parts of Italy along the way. I do not know any thing about the nicest places to visit and would like suggestions that would conclude my trip in Palermo maybe, due to relatives there. This is a trip for my husbands 60th birthday and he has always wanted to visit Italy! Thank you for your time and suggestions.

That should be a fun trip. I would recommend flying into either Rome or Venice. If you have never been to Italy before, I suggest starting in Venice. It is more laid back than Rome or Florence. Here is a sample 14 (or so) day itinerary for you: Day 1 depart US Day 2 Arrive in Venice and wander the city Day 3-4 Sights in Venice - San Marco, Rialto Bridge, Accademia museum Day 5 Train to Florence, wander around the Duomo Day 6-7 Florence museums, churches, maybe side trip to Sienna Day 8 Train to Rome, then flight to Palermo Day 9-11 Visit family in Palermo Day 12 flight to Rome, start visiting sights Day 13-14 sights in Rome, maybe side trip to Orvietto
Day 15 Fly home This gets you to the major sights and a few days with family. If you stretch it to 21 days, add at least 2 days each to Palermo and Rome. I would also add a day trip to either Sienna or Orvietto. You can buy train tickets in advance and save a lot of eruos (trenitalia.com or italotreno.it). There are cheap air carriers such as EasyJet and RyanAir that can get you to Palermo and back from Rome for around 50 euros each way. Just be careful about baggage fees! make sure you pay for that in advance or it will cost you dearly! You can check on flights from this web site or directly on the airline web sites. http://www.skyscanner.com/ Enjoy!

Regarding Stephen's suggestions above. Instead of going all the way to Rome just to catch a flight to Palermo, you might as well fly directly from Florence to Palermo non stop.
Volotea (volotea.com) is a low cost Spanish airline which will start flying non stop from Florence FLR to Palermo PMO next March. Alternatively you could take a train from Florence to inside the Pisa Airport (1 hr ride at a cost of less than 6 euro) and take a flight with RyanAir (an Irish low cost airline) from Pisa PSA to Palermo PMO. Going to Rome airport from Florence will take you almost 3 hrs and will cost you an additional 60 euro ($80) for the train ride.
