Go to the following link to book the third ring and underground tour through the official website. You cannot do it 'self guided'. Tickets are currently only on sale until the end of February but dates in March and April will hopefully be available soon. the cost for an adult, including booking fee, is 11Euro. Children are only charged the 2Euro booking fee.

As well as the tickets for the tour, you also need a general admission ticket for the site. This is 14Euro for adults, including the booking fee. Children are only charged the 2Euro booking fee.

Roma Pass will give you "free" (you pay for it in the pass) entry to the first two sites you visit. Many people choose to use one of their free entries for the Colosseum to avoid the queues. However you will still need a booking for the third ring and underground tour, whether you use your Roma Pass or buy a general admission ticket online.

Note, there is also a number you can ring on the coop website if you prefer not to do the booking online.

Your kids will get into the colosseum for free. They will also get into other state run sites for free so the romapass for them will not be of value.

It's hard to say if the romapass will be of value for you because I don't know what you'll be visiting. Basically, you need to visit 3 or more sites covered by the pass to make it pay off. If you're not doing that then just pay as you go.

You can book tickets and tour at the official website listed above. If you want a tour of the forum you can book that at the same site for 5 euros each. Just click on the link for the forum. You can visit the forum on your own or with an audio guide but it's the one site where a guide comes in very handy to make sense of the ruins.
