Help with Amalfi Trip

I am going to Sorrento for 7 days and 3 in Rome, during the beginning of October. I have a few questions. I’m planning one day in Capri. Should I wait to book an around the island tour until I get there? Should I do Anna Capri first?

For my visit to Amalfi is very the quickest. Is it best to take a taxi to Ravello for a few hours, or do I need a whole day? Is going to Ischia from Sorrento for a day recommended? I was thinking about reducing the Sorrento days and spending two in Ischia?
Currently
Day 1:arrive. Day 2 rest and walking tour Day 3 Capri/ Anna Capri Day Day 4 Pompeii
Day 5 rest Day 6 Amalfi/ Ravello Day 7 ?

Ischia (to me) is mostly about the beaches and thermals. But if you wanted a relaxing couple of days, there are worse places to be. Average highs the first week of October should be around 24°C.

For future reference, it's Anacapri.

  • We spent 11 days in Sorrento in April and loved it. Our day 1 and 2 was similar to yours. On day 2 we also picked up our ferry tickets that we had pre-bought through FerryHopper. We had vouchers that needed to be exchanged for tickets. It's a good idea to exchange the day before so you don't get caught in the early morning crowds for the ferries.
  • I'm assuming your first sentence in the second paragraph is asking about the quickest way to Amalfi. The quickest way to Amalfi Town is via ferry. Car and bus will get you there, but slowly.
  • Ravello was my favourite town of the big 3 on the Amalfi Coast, but a full day in Ravello might be a bit much unless you love to linger. A taxi from Sorrento will be expensive. There is a bus from Amalfi Town but earlier this year the road was closed to buses due to road repairs after an accident. If that's still the case then a taxi makes much more sense than a bus.
  • I can't answer about Ischia as we ran out of time and didn't make it there.
  • I'd highly recommend that you follow up a trip to Pompeii with a trip to the Archaeological Museum in Naples. If you have time, one train stop north of Pompeii is the Villa of Oplontis which is a great addition to Pompeii. There is also a free shuttle from Pompeii but it's not well signed or promoted.

If you can do only one day on Capri, start early. We liked Anacapri more than Capri town. Don’t miss the church of S. Michele. I would suggest going there first; then working your way down, which you have to do for return to the mainland. Check the ferry schedules. When we traveled from Amalfi, the last boat left around 6 p.m.
Ravello is wonderful; the views from one of the two villas worth visiting are stunning. That villa has a schedule of musical events, but I don’t know about October. Should you be interested, a travel agent in Amalfi, who booked tickets for us, informed us that it was best not to expect to get a taxi afterwards because so many people would be competing for them. We reserved (and paid) ahead.

You have a nice plan. Wait until you get to Capri and see if you want to do the hour island boat ride. I enjoyed it and thought it was worth the money, but there’s no need to book ahead. There’s tons of them. You never know what the conditions may be. Take the earliest ferry you can to Capri. Skip Capri Town and head right up to Anacapri. It’s quiet up there until lunchtime, as the crowds arrive and flood Capri Town. Be sure to take the chairlift up to Monte Solaro, the true highlight.

Ravello was about my favorite town on the coast too. You ought to be able to catch the regular bus there and back, but a splurge taxi would still make it worthwhile.

I’d pass on Ischia in favor of a day (or half day) in Naples, or another daytrip to the AC.

Very useful info! I was planning to do this trip beginning of November, I had been there again 15 years.

Thanks also for the hint about picking-up the ferry tickets on the day before. Really helpful!
