help with 10 day itinerary in and out of rome

This is first italy trip with my sister and two daughters in twenties. In order to fulfill all of our dreams of italy, we have alot of stops. Day one arrive in rome around 10 am, leave on day 11 about 1 pm. I have read alot of rs italy and am overwhelmed planning. Sights and hotels are easy part, it planning the train schedules and worrying if all is feasible that scares me. My thoughts are day 1,2,3 in rome, possible night train to venice on evening of day 3, day 4 and 5 in venice, morning day 6 to florence, day 7 florence, morning day 8 to naples and on to sorrento, day 9 sorrento, day 10 evening return to rome for next day flight. I know it is alot. Any thoughts?

I agree with Elizabeth & Sally. I would add a day to Rome & do a day trip from Rome to Orvieto. Leave south of Rome for another trip.

It is doable. Some of us will suggest that it is too many location changes. That you will spend of a lot of time packing/unpacking, checkin/out, etc. A night train to Venice would be difficult since it is only a 3.5 hr ride as it is. I do think there is a night train that leaves Termini around midnight or so and into Venice around 5,6 AM. Night trains work much better when it is a 8 to 10 hr train ride. You might actually get some sleep then. It might make a little more sense to consider an open jaws ticket -- into Rome and home from Venice or Milan. Saves back tracking on a short trip. I also would drop Sorrento and save it for the next trip. What time of year are you considering?

Cut it down. At this rate you will spend most of your trip in transit. And travel days are tiring and, while still interesting, aren't the dream trip you seem to want.

We just did Rome, CT, and Venice (in Rome, out Venice) in the same time frame you are planning. It was perfect (4, 2, 3 nights at each). I would recommend telling yourself, repeatedly, that you will return, and really do justice to three sites in that length of time. You'll have more fun, it will be relaxing and enjoyable, and it allows for schedule changes due to weather, closures, strikes, etc.

Imagine what your ideal trip will be. If it involves being on a train or in a station for quite a bit of time, then continue with your plans. If you want to sit, sip wine, enjoy leisurely dinners, and see and immerse yourself in the sites, then cut back.

How about Rome, Florence, Venice, then go back to Rome for 1 night before you return. Day trip a day from Rome if you really must see a hill town or the ruins at Ostia Antica or Tivoli.

Remember, the first day or so, you'll be jet lagged.

I would suggest leaving Sorrento out. Do the big three, Rome, Venice, and Florence. We loved Sorrento, and one day there is just a tease. I'd suggest adding that extra day to either Florence or Rome.

Safe Travels.
