We are taking our honeymoon in Italy. We will be in rome in June for Sunday and Monday, leaving Tuesday morning to go to other areas in Italy.
I'm really confused as to what area to stay in when in Rome. The book show a lot of different areas and I'm scared to pick one. I think it is better to be central right? We are doing Caesar shuffle, spanish steps, and Pantheon on day one. Day 2 we are doing Vatican, St. Pters, Colosseum, and the dome.
Help please. Thanks.
We always stay within a couple blocks of the train station. Easy to get to and from with luggage via walking. The train station is the center of the bus system. It is very convenient to everything/
Piazza della Republica is a good area, too, per Steves' book. One other suggestion: the Colosseum and the Forum (a.k.a. Caesar Shuffle) are right next to one another, at the exact same Metro stop. These should be done on the same day, one after the other.
Thanks John. I was thinking of staying in the Via Firenze area. What do you think? I like that it is central and close to the trains.
Hi Dan--My choice would be to stay near Piazza Navona or Campo de Fiori. True, you'll have to take a cab from the train station, but after that you can walk everywhere. If it were my honeymoon, I would want to stay in an area that feels romantic, like the old city center, and well situated for the evening "passeggiata." Definitely plan to do Rick's Night Walk Across Rome. I have also stayed near Termini and found the area safe and convenient, but the city center is more romantic. Consider Hotel Due Torri or Smeraldo, both Rick recommended hotels.
In Rome, Piazza Navona. Wildly romantic - in the center of the old city - walkable to everything - great restaurants - even better gelato - and the night time on the Piazza is unbeatable.
We stayed at the Hotel Navona. It used to be in Rick's book but wasn't in the last couple. I'd like to hear from someone close to this website as to why it was removed. We found it to be a fabulous hotel with friendly, helpful staff. Clean rooms with a lot of space and good bath facilities. We did have to pay in cash though which was ok. We knew about that ahead of time, so we saved the cash in our travel docs envelope.
