Help understanding Train Schedule from Rome to Florence

I was looking into the train schedule for July 16th from Rome to Florence. Since we will be checking out in the morning of the 16th I was looking for trains that leave Roma in the afternoon. The earliest it shows me is for 18:20 hours which gets in at 21:20hrs! Does the schedule change for the summer months? Should I consider travelling by bus? I was expecting more frequency of trains between Rome and Florence. Any suggestions from all the experts out there? Thanks for taking the time to answer my querries.

Schedules change mid June. New schedules not loaded yet.

July 16 is a Friday. Look up April 16 also a Friday. Exact times will probably differ slightly but not enought ot matter for planning purposes.

But tickets when you are in Italy.

The schedule will change in June. There will be slight changes. To get a better idea you can input an earlier date to see how many trains will be running. The schedules and prices won't change drastically so you can get a really good idea of what they will be. Check back the first or second week of June for the new schedules.

When you do check, you will find that Rome/Florence is a major route, and trains run at least every half hour. Journey time can range from an hour and a half to four hours, depending on the train and what you are willing to pay. I would just plan on buying when you get to Italy.

I believe there are something like 55 trains per day between Roma and Firenze. We just showed up at Termini when we were ready to go and bought tickets on the next train - the automatic ticket machines work great and have English instructions. Use cash for the machines, it's quick and easy. The fast trains are about 1 1/2 hours. The slower ones take up to 4 hours.

Thank you all for your advice. We are 2 adults and 2 teens travelling to Italy in July and looking forward to having a wonderful vacation. I'm a planner and like to have everything under control. We have to take a train from Rome to Florence, Florence to Naples and on Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. From all the posts I've been reading, I now know that all the train bookings will have to be done in Italy. The hotel we are staying in Sorrento offered to pick us and our luggage up from Naples for Euro 119. The fares for the train from Naples to Sorrento is Euro 6.70 each. Is it worth paying that money to be picked up from Naples in the month of July?

Ru,

What site are you using the look into the train schedules? As the others have mentioned, there are numerous trains on that route every day, so it will be extremely easy to get from Rome to Florence.

Using the EuroStar Italia/Alta Velocita, the trip is only 1H:35M. Using an arbitrary Friday in June shows a train departing at 10:45, arriving at 12:20. That's just about perfect timing for checking out of one Hotel and into another.

Regarding the trip from Florence to Sorrento, I wouldn't bother with the "pickup service". I would again use the EuroStar Italia to Napoli Centrale (3 hours) and walk down to the Circumvesuviana station for the trip to Sorrento. Be sure to watch your belongings on the Circumvesuviana, as it has a bit of a "reputation".

Cheers!

Ru, must you go via that route? Rome to Florence to Naples will take you back through Rome. Just sayin'....
If you already have your flight booked, please disregard. If you havent booked, try to fly into Florence or Pisa and work your way South.

Thank you Steve, Ken, Ron, Paul, Becki, Donna, & Bob for all your replies and valuable information. Ken I was on the trenitalia and the deutschebahn website and Bob I have already made flight reservations. We had one free ticket and so we were very limited in our choices/selections. We will be in Rome 3 nights, 4 nights in Florence, 5 nights in Sorrento and 2 nights back in Rome. Have already made hotel arrangements. Ever since my daughter saw the Hillary Duff movie when she was 5 years old, it has been her dream to go to the trevi fountain! Hence more time in Rome!!
