Hi We're traveling from Salerno to Sicily by train and want to get off around half way there and spend overnight. We want to break up the train travel into shorter times, 3 or 4 hours the first day, and then finish the trip to Sicily on the second day. Any suggestions on which town to stay at? It needs to be one of the towns on the train line. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks! Tabatha
Tabatha, Nix the train trip. It is long, boring, worthless ride to Sicily, on some of their older trains. You will be wasting two days if you take this trip. We hated this trip. Instead take one of the lo-cost inter EU airlines that flys out of Naples to Palermo or Catania. Use Whichbudget.com or Skyscanner to find them, paying close attention to baggage restrictions/weight limits. Another alternative is to book a cabin on one of the ferries that goes from Naples to Sicily, if you want an overnight option.
Thanks!
Hi Tabatha, Ditto Steve's remarks. Our train trip started way south of Naples (Lamezia Terme) to Catania. It was a long, hot, crowded journey that I wouldn't repeat. Fascinating loading of train onto ferry but not worth the lost time to see Sicily. We flew back to Rome FCO on EasyJet, 1 hour, cheap and easy. Enjoy Italia and Sicilia. Ciao, Sherry
I've taken the train from Napoli to Sicilian many times. Fly.
They now have faster Frecciabianca fast trains on some runs until V. San Giovanni/Reggio Calabria with few stops. These trains are modern, just as those serving services Genova-Roma, for instance. However, it is not time-efficient if you are going to Sicilia. It takes a lot of time to cross the strait etc. I'd just fly.
