Help-travel advice for getting from Florence to Montepulciano without car

Planning a trip in April and would like advice on how to get to Montepulciano(and back) from Florence. It looks like it will be a train/bus combo but I am having a little trouble deciphering Italian train options and schedules. Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions.

At the Florence Santa Maria Novella (main train station) you'd take a slow train going to Rome Termini . In 10 stops (1 hr. 45 min.,) you get off at Chiusi-Chianciano Terminal. Then you change to a slow train that goes toward Siena and get off at Montepulciano (in 13 minutes).

The Montepulciano station is 8KMs from the town. There is a bus but more convenient to take the bus from the Chiusi station. See rome2rio
