we are in sorrento going to rome. We can get tickets to naples ,but every time we try to purchase tickets online from naples to Rome...we get an error code. Any advice?
Thanks a million!!
Nancy
Just purchase it from a ticket machine when you get to Naples. They are easy enough to use, just be aware you'll likely need a credit card with a PIN number, or you will need to use cash.
Nancy,
For the trip from Sorrento to Naples, you'll be using the Circumvesuviana which is a different rail network than Trenitalia. I've never heard of anyone buying tickets online for that? It's very easy to buy tickets for that when in Sorrento.
You should be able to buy tickets online for the trip from Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini. When is this trip taking place? If you're trying to buy tickets too far in the future, that could explain the difficulties? For the Naples-Rome trip, you can either travel by Freccia / Trenitalia or use the competing Italo service. If your destination is Roma Termini, Trenitalia has numerous trains every day. If you want to use Italo, they have limited runs to Roma Termini, but many more to Roma Tiburtina. The specifics will likely depend on your travel date and times.
It seems you are in-country now.... Hard to say why you are getting an error code. Are you using "Napoli" and "Roma" as your cities? Ar eyou looking at the freccia high-speed train? Are you using Trenitalia.com?
Rather than fretting too much, I would just buy at the station in Naples. The machines are easy, or be prepared to stand in line for human assistance. There are always seats....
Laurel is right, you won't save any money buying online at this point. Machines with pictures of euro notes and coins on them will take cash and make change, you can get (loud) instructions in English as you go through the process.
It's likely too late now, but the error code probably came up because that train is sold out. The high-speed train, even though one leaves every 60-90 minutes, is often booked in advance, since it doesn't allow standing passengers. This leaves you having to take the cheaper, but excruciatingly slow and crowded, local line into Rome.
I hardly can believe they are sold out. For tomorrow (11/6), every train shows seats available. No Super Economy of course, but a lot of trains show Economy Premiums or 1st class seats at slightly less than full fare standard price. Friday (11/7) shows less availability of discount seats, but full fare (price 43 euro standard) seats are available on all trains. Must be some other problem. Regardless, you should be able to get seats once you are at Napoli Centrale. Trains run every hour and some times more frequent, so you shouldn't have any trouble.
Same thing happened to us when trying to book online using my I Pad. The hotel front desk kindly called Italo for us (we had no cell plan) and I spoke to an English-speaking service rep. Booked the train we wanted over the phone and received email confirmation. No particular reason for the error code that I could tell, just a glitch. Used my I Pad for 2 other reservations with no trouble,
