many hours spent learning this web site but the site will not accept any of my credit cards. Visa, a VISA depbit and American Express all fail despite excellent credit etc. I am sitting in the US trying to plan a trip in May and now not knowing if I will get the tickets from Rome to Arezzo ever purchased. Can anyone help?
If it's any consolation, you won't have any trouble getting tickets from Rome to Arezzo if you wait until you arrive. In the meantime you might try this site to make sure you're doing everything correctly: http://www.roninrome.com/%20transportation/booking-on-the-trenitalia-website Good luck.
Historically, trenitalia has had a problem accepting US credit cards on the website. There have been reports on some of the travel blogs that there is a VISa that might work. But you should have no problem purchasing your tickets on arrival at the train station either at the window or one of the machines with the same credit cards.
As already mentioned, you should not have any problems if you wait until you get to Italy to purchase your tickets. If you still want to pre-purchase (to take advantage of a MiniFare, etc.) you will not be able to use AMEX, because Trenitalia is only accepting Italian issued AMEX cards for now. I've had no issues purchasing tickets using my MasterCard over the past week or so, and others have reported success when using a Visa card. Did you register as a user on Trenitalia? I could be wrong but I believe you have to be a registered user in order to complete a purchase (outside Italy). Also, try calling the bank that issued your Visa and let them know that you are planning to make the purchase so they don't block it for fraud purposes. I got the fraud alert call from my bank when I purchased my Scavi tour tickets, lol. Good luck!
I just purchased my tickets last night with no problem on first try with my Visa Debit Card but what I noticed was it refers to being a "Verified Visa". I at some point a couple of months ago when I was making a purchase online a pop up came up to sign up for "Verified Visa", which I did, so maybe you should look into signing up online with Visa first and then try again in about an hour. Hope this helps! Good Luck!
There are only two types of trains that go to Arezzo from Rome. These are the Regionale and IC trains. Trenitalia will not sell you a ticket online for a Regionale train. No seat reservations available or permitted. It's like your local bus. You buy your ticket, get on and find your seat. If no seats, you can stand. The IC train does require reservations. Trenitalia seems to be loosening up on U.S. credit cards but they still do not like the American Express card from the U.S. They do like the EU version. Trenitalia does use Verified by Visa. Just google VbV and sign up on their website.
