Is there a night train from rome-venice? The only one I can seem to find has a 2 hours lay-over at 1:00 in the morning! I don't know if I can find a hotel in venice, we'll be there one night, a friday, the 21 of Sept. Is there a halfway point we could stay at? Help! Thanks,
~Jenny
Jenny - I looked on www.trenitalia.it and found the ICN 774 Marco Polo leaving from Rome Tiburtania station at 10:50 pm the night of the Sept. 20th and arriving in Venice at 5:24 am. It appears to have cuccetti berths in 2nd class. Try that?
When you go to the Trenitalia site given by Doug and select the night train, click on the drop-down menu next to "seat assignment." You'll see a list of several choices, including four-bunk couchettes, three-bed sleepers, and two-bed sleepers.
if possible go 1st class, we went 2nd class from paris to rome and it was a nightmare...big group of people partying all night....
have fun!
Yes, I just booked the 774 from rome to venice for a night in september through trenitalia.com. I picked the "Double seat compartment". Then chose the complete compartment option. I think it is a double sleeper at night even though it says "seat" in the discription. I'll know for sure sometime around 22:50 when I get to my compartment. As for rooms in Venice, I looked at booking.com and venere.com. Both had rooms available for the 21st of Sept. Most rooms were on Lido. It's an island just off venice. You can take the water taxi to the island. You have to take the taxi anyway, might as well stay on a bit longer and have a "cruise".

opps, I ment take the waterbus (vaporetti) not the water taxi. I hear that the water taxi is quite expensive.

I can not imagine a night train in Italy where thieves do not make their rounds. couchette compartments are sometimes not possible to lock from inside. sleeping cars can always be locked from inside. one can also travel on a seat such a short distance. be careful: thieves come in, spray gas and steal the travellers belongings.
you can take an early day train, bringing you to venice noon time. never leave your things unattended
when going to the wc or restaurant in the train.

have a nice trip!
Jenny, we took the overnight train as what Doug described on his post. The Tiburtania Station is only a few stops from the Termini via the Blue line.
