Help! Rome to Assisi 2 days

Hello. We are planning a trip next month and since our Airbnb starts 2 days after our arrival, we wanted to go from the airport to Assisi and stay there for those couple of days. However I am finding that going on private transport is extremely expensive!!! We are 3 people and will have 3 luggages and backpacks so I am thinking the train would be too difficult? Anyone has any recommendations for transport? We will need to return to Rome as well after two days. I would very much appreciate recommendations. I don’t know if maybe leaving the big luggage at the airport would be a safe option? That way we could just take the train. Thank you so much!!!

Do you have mobility issues?
Thousands of people take trains with luggage, you just have to be able to handle it yourself

There are no trains from FCO to Assisi
You will take the Leonardo Express train to Roma Termini then a regional train to Assisi
Or taxi from FCO to Termini ( fixed rate 55 euros so actually not much more than 3 tix on Leonardo Express)

You could leave your luggage at Termini ( secure left luggage for a fee)

No need to purchase any train tix in advance-regional trains so price never changes and they can’t sell out. No reserved seats

Use the official train company site
https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html

Another option is car rental
Pick up as you leave FCO - drive to Assisi-drive back to Rome or drop along the way (we dropped in Spoleto and took train from there)

You will need to read up on driving in Italy, research parking in Assisi and all drivers must have an IDP

Hi. Thank you for your reply. No mobility issues but I do have some back issues and we are three women. One other also has back issues. I thought about renting a car but read it can be scary to drive in Italy? I was just also reading about storage at the airport, it says private storage companies are used. Do you know of a reputable one? Thank you again!

Storing your luggage at the airport doesn’t make sense as the airport is well outside Rome in opposite direction from Assisi

I suggest taking a taxi from airport to Termini (official taxi rank outside)
Check your luggage there then continue on train to Assisi

I have never used luggage storage but I amsure it is reliable and secure at the station
Hopefully someone here can give you more specific advice on that

Pack light because you will have to handle your luggage coming and going!

Assisi is one of the most peaceful and beautiful cities in Italy. I am sure you will enjoy it! The trains from Roma Termini to Assisi are not too hard to handle. I suggest taking your luggage with you unless you can put two days/nights worth of 'stuff' into your backpacks. That said, luggage storage in Rome is convenient and very safe. Getting your suitcases and yourselves onto the train isn't difficult. Maybe one could get on first and help bring the luggage aboard? Same when you get off the train in Assisi. The train station for Assisi is below the actual medieval site. A taxi directly to your apartment or hotel is easy and usually costs me 20 euro (I've done this 17 times). You don't mention accomodations in Assisi. Hope you have been looking. My suggestion: you want to stay near Piazza Commune. It's easy to get anywhere from there and it is a wonderful place to hang out at night. I have always stay at Hotel Sole, which is right inbetween Basilica Santa Chiara and Piazza Commune. assisihotelsole.com Family owned and run for several generations. Bonus: there's an elevator in this hotel!
