My wife and I scheduled to travel to Lake Como at the end of our vacation to Italy. I have a few questions that I was hoping to receive feedback on. My question are as follows: 1. We will be staying at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni. Is this hotel worth the price? 2. We will be staying here from Oct 9 - Oct 12. Is the weather too cold this time of year to go on the boat, etc? Is this a bad time to visit? 3. Any 'must do' ideas while we are there? Any feedback/experiences that you share will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
You're from Chicago and you're asking if the weather will be too cold? Not by what you're used to, it won't be. October should be pretty mild. Maybe a little rain.
Dan, A few comments on your questions..... (1.) I've never stayed at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni (Bellagio) as it's way above my price range, but I'm sure you'll be VERY comfortable there. Whether it's "worth the price" is somewhat subjective and dependent on personal opinion. The reviews on Trip Advisor seem to be mostly "excellent". (2.) The weather should be reasonable in early October, but of course there are never any guarantees. I'd suggest taking along some warmer clothes for "layering" and also some light rain gear, and you should have no problems. (3.) For "must do" ideas, I'd suggest having a look at the Italy Guidebook. I'd definitely recommend a day trip to charming Varenna across the lake (about 20 minutes from Bellagio), which is where most of Rick's readers tend to stay. You could also tour other places in the mid-lake area, and have a look at some of the elaborate gardens in some of the Villas. Happy travels!
1. That is one of the most famous luxury historic hotels in Italy. Churchill, FDR, Eisenhauer, JFK and many other famous people, including famous actors and actresses have stayed there. It was worth to them. It's certainly too expensive for me. With the price of a double room at that hotel you can probably fly from Chicago to Italy round trip. 2. Shouldn't be cold, based on historical data. Maybe a little chilly at night and maybe rainy. But not particularly cold. Actually it should be pleasantly warm during the day. 3. Take a boat and visit the towns across (Menaggio, Varenna). Midlake is the best part of the lake. Just walk around, sit at a lake shore cafe' and enjoy the views.
Thank you very much. We are traveling there for our 10th anniversary, and had heard that the Serbelloni was a great hotel...the reviews look great but I thought I would just double check to see if anyone had stayed there recently. Thank you for the ideas on things to do...we will check them out when we get there...and add some additional layers just in case.
Booking.com has an incredible number of hotels in the area. Last time I looked, there were something like 208 bed and breakfasts showing on Trip Advisor. A room is just a place to put my head for 8 hours. I prefer to spend my travel dollars in different ways.
You're certainly going to a beautiful region.
According to weather.com and meoweather.com: Chicago's average October high/low: 63°/46° Bellagio's average October high/low: 63°/47° Seattle's average October high/low: 60°/47° (put this in for Michael from Seattle :))
