Help pretty please-Honeymoon!

hi travelers!

I have been running into a problem finding transportation between St Marks Square to Marco Polo Airport for my early early flight.
I will be staying in Venice from May 27-May 31st.
My flight to Greece is at 5:30am on May 31, 2016. I estimate we need to be at the airpot by 3:45-4am to check in. The plan is to have only carryons so I am not sure if that makes a difference with how late or early we should arrive.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what to do?

My initial plan was to book in St Marks square for all 4 nights and take a water taxi (expensive about 100-120 euros) around 3/3:30 am to the airport.

My other option is to stay in St Marks square from May 27-May 30 and book a place on airbnb or hotel in Mainland Venice. From there I would check in on may 30 and then I would either I do a day trip from where somewhere else (possibly Milan, Florence, Tuscany?) or just go back to Venice if we felt like we wanted to do more things in Venice.

What is my best option to get to the airport at that time?

Thanks!

I had a similar situation. My flight was, to me, early morning, like 7 am, so for peace of mind, I stayed at the airport the night before.
There's a Marriott there, and it was clean and quiet. Lots of Americans staying there. Dinner at the hotel restaurant was OK, and next morning there was a bit of a wait for the shuttle back to the airport, but the stay was a necessary trade-off. Good luck and have a wonderful trip.

I think I would have to taxi over to the airport where I stay. since my flight is super early.

Do you think taking a water taxi would be too risky ? I agree the peace of mind would be a wonderful thing. may I ask how did you occupy your time if you stayed near the airport on the last day?

Did you end up going back to Venice / St marks or anything ?

My recollection is that the airport doesn't really open until 5 a.m. -- we chose to stay near the airport at hotel Titian (??) with a first shuttle at about 4:30 a.m. Took the bus from Venice in the late afternoon.

A water taxi is your best bet, and you should be able to arrange it in advance, through your hotel.

From there I would check in on may 30 and then I would either I do a day trip from where somewhere else (possibly Milan, Florence, Tuscany?) or just go back to Venice if we felt like we wanted to do more things in Venice.

Milan, Florence and "Tuscany" are too far for a day trip. Venice can occupy us for a week-at-a-time and we go there often, but if you need to escape, try Padova as a day trip.

With a 5.30am flight I would definitely stay at the airport for the evening of 30 May.
Here perhaps .... http://www.anniaparkhotel.it/
Store your luggage at your Venice hotel and transfer across in the early evening, giving you time for afternoon sightseeing in Venice.

I would second staying out at the airport at the Marriott, as I think it's reasonably priced. If you go on Google Maps and magnify the Marco Polo Airport area, you can see a number of alternative hotels in the area--many of which can get you to the airport by courtesy car or a short taxi ride.
This is a lesson to be learned. To take a 5:30 a.m. flight, you'll get to Greece around 6:30 a.m. What are you going to be doing with your luggage, etc. until you can check into your hotel mid afternoon? It's hard enough to change locations, but you'll be interrupting your normal sleep pattern. It's best to take later flights and to arrive in a new location rested.

We would get to Greece at 8:55 am and I'm assuming time to exit the airport maybe another 15-30mins.

Also I was going to stir my luggage at the Airbnb place early which has been prearranged. If no one is occupying the Airbnb place before us then we can Check in early.

Hi iatemypanda,
On my last day in Venice, by the time I got to the Marriott at the airport, I'd already had a long day getting there and fortunately, had done all my sightseeing in Venice. I was very tired, so going back to St. Mark's, though always an enjoyable place, was not appealing. Since it was the end of my trip, I must admit the noise, the hustle and bustle involved in travel were getting to me. So I was content to have a quiet day organizing my notes, reading, reorganizing myself. Travel is always exciting and I don't want to stop, but after a while, my body says, "No more!" So I just sit down and plan my next adventure :) Congratulations on your marriage and best wishes.

hi carole

how many days did you spend in Venice?

I am just wondering if I 3 days is more than enough or is 4 is too much and I should look into not booking my stay for 4 complete days at an Airbnb near St marks square

Hi iatemypanda,
I've been to Venice many times over the years, so to me, 2 nights is fine, depending on what time I arrive on the first day. If I leave after lunch on the 3rd day--when shops and restaurants are closed anyway--I've found that to be quite satisfactory. I also console myself that I'll be back! Have a wonderful honeymoon!

Is anyone familiar with these 2 areas in Venice I am thinking of booking at?

Calle Corona Leonardo, 30122 Venezia, Italy

Salizada San Lio, 30122 Venezia, Italy

It is my first time in Venice and I am not sure what would be the best option for our stay.

I worried so much about location on our first trip. In subsequent trips, I realized that the specific location was not so important as Venice is easy to get around in. It is important that you be comfortable with the room and establishment.

The first address is fairly easy to get to from the San Zaccaria vaporetto stop. The second address looks like a more complicated arrival from the Rialto stop; However, they are only about a 6-minute walk apart! Will the owner meet you at the vaporetto stop? Until you get used to Venice it is helpful to have someone guide you to the place the first time. Unless you are taking a water taxi that will drop you very close?

I believe the first place the owner will meet me. I am not sure about the second stop yet.

I also emailed water taxi companies to get a price quote and to check if they can take me to Marco Polo airport at 3:30am. This will help me decide if we want to stay at the Mainland Venice area or at either of the above locations.

When I check rome2rio to map out how to get from VCE airport to Calle Corona Leonardo, 30122 Venezia, Italy it said it would take about 47 mins with the train and walking for 28 mins?

Am I understanding this incorrectly. We have to lug our stuff for 28 mins to get to Calle Corona? wow I had no idea!

Any reason why you want to walk when there are dozens of vaporettos which can whisk you down the Grand Canal?

Oh, and there is no train from the airport. Which train is rome2rio trying to get you on?

Alilaguna, water taxi, or bus (easiest) to P Roma and then a vaporetto would the choices I would be choosing from....

Rome2Rio is probably not the best for directions at this micro level. Using Googlemaps is more accurate. You would have to walk 9 minutes from the Rialto vaporetto stop and 6 form the San Zaccaria one. It is a longer walk if you take the Alilaguna, about 19 minutes from Fondamente Nove.

You are probably right it didn't consider the water bus or anything. That was concerning I didn't know how to walk that far lugging things to our B&B.

I have emailed a couple water taxis to see the cost and time they can take us.

No response yet :(

So I am too scared to book may 30th night without confirming this as I might need to stay closer to the airport. I wonder how other people manage flights early in the AM

Maybe a vaporetto from Rialto to P. Roma and then a land taxi?

I think you can take the "N" line at 3:30 AM from San Zaccaria (see schedule here, near the bottom). You'd get to Piazzale Roma at 4:09. you could then take a taxi to Marco Polol allegedly a trip of less than 20 minutes. I have not done this, but it looks feasible. (I looked it up based on Peter.S.Aus idea. Ask the hotel/B&B. What do they recommend?
