Help please with where to stay for 2 nights after visiting Rome?

We will be visiting Venice, Florence, and Rome and have 2 days that are left unplanned. What would be options for a great experience?

Which airport are you departing from? That might help answer your question.

I would vote for an overnight in beautiful Sorrento, visit the Isle of Capri from there and/or Pompeii.

I am partial to Tuscany. You can spend your extra two days there. Touring the hilltowns, San Gimingnano, Siena, Montalcini, Pienza, etc. I highly recommend a b&b outside of San Gim called IlVicario. Lovely hosts, reasonable. Rated #1 on Trip Advisor.

Considering this stay in Sorrento would there be a train from Rome or would it be best to rent a car?

You don't say how long you'll be in Rome. If only a couple of days, I would add the 2 days there with maybe a daytrip out of Rome, to either Orvieto or Ostia Antica.

When are you going?

That is pretty much my upcoming itinerary in February. I am also spending 2 days in Ravenna (first time) and a day in Verona (return visit).

If neither of those turns you on, perhaps add a day trip from Florence to Siena and a day trip from Rome to Orvieto.

Mmm, my thought is ,, how many day have you allowed other places,, I would be tempted to look at adding days to other places instead of adding more travel.

Do you already have a side-trip planned to Pompeii / Herculaneum? If not, that gets my vote for 1 of the days.

I would go to Orvieto which is a 1 hr. train ride from Rome. It's a wonderful, quaint hill town in Umbria. There are great restaurants and lots to see and do. Look it up in Rick's Italy book. Have a great trip.

Since you're doing 3 large cities, a smaller town along your route north to south would be a good choice. Orvieto would offer the best contrast. It's really nice and has just enough to fill 2 days. Siena is another great option with lots to do, but offers less contrast than Orvieto. Padua and Verona are other options to consider. With only 2 unplanned nights and a Rome departure, I think Sorrento (which I really like) is better left for another trip.
