Planning to travel last week of June, no airline tickets yet.
We have 8 days with a travel day on each end.
Is it best to fly into Naples?
Looks like it would be a good place to take excursions out from Sorrento.
Would like to see Amalfi Coast, Vesuvius, etc
Want some free days as well to relax.
Don't want to move around to new hotel every day.
Does anyone have suggestions?
Rent a car or use local transportation?
Plenty of threads--recent ones--on this topic, so search that for more info.
We were there mid-March for 5 nights. I think that was about enough, even with the daytrips. But first things first--it being only 6+ weeks away from your trip, you had better get cracking on the air & lodging now. Good places book up quickly.
In Sorrento, two choices to stay--down by the marina or up in the old town near Piazza Tasso. The marina is more scenic but more expensive and not within walking distance to the train/bus station for your daytrips. Near the old town has more reasonable restaurants, very good quality too. The area is not quite as scenic, but it's a 5 minute walk to the station. We liked it there.
If it were I, with 8 days on the ground, even if you are concentrating on Naples south, I don't know if I'd stay in Sorrento the whole time. Maybe start there for 5-6 nights, then experience Naples for a couple days before flying out of there.

Wise words from Jay: high season is becoming longer and longer in Italy's most popular places. I'll also agree with his advice to base yourself in the upper part of Sorrento, and to maybe consider spending a couple of nights in Naples - especially if you end up booking flights out of there. You don't want to be in Sorrento on the morning you have to catch a plane!
But where to fly in and out can depend on cost, availability and number of connections. We've flown out of there once but it was sort of a long, painful hairball of Naples> Rome> Amsterdam> Minneapolis that I wouldn't do again...not that this would be the case for you. Arriving in Naples will shorten your journey time to the coast but prices and variety of flight times/connections may be more favorable from Rome (Fiumicino). This would, of course, mean returning to Rome the evening before a plane out.
Definitely use public transit for Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi to avoid parking issues, dodging ZTLs, and heavy high-season traffic on very narrow coastal roads.
Thank you for your thoughts on this. I know we are getting a late start, but hope to see what can be arranged on spite of it.
Prepare yourself, it will be very hot. We were there late September - early October and it was still hot.
