Help Planning Northern Italy Trip

My wife and I have been to Italy several times and want to go back again a year from now (June/July 2025). This time we want to focus on the extreme northern part. We have to limit ourselves to a 2-week trip.
I have a general itinerary in mind but would really appreciate your advice in adjusting it.
Here's my ideas:
- Fly in to Venice - 2 or 3 nights (been there many times but still can't resist it!)
- Car, train or bus to Bolzano - 2 nights (Should we rent a car for this section?)
- Alpe di Siusi (Castelrotto?) - 2 nights
Lake Como - 4 or 5 nights
Milan airport hotel - 1 night

Would it be wiser to stay in Bolzano for all 4 nights and just drive to Castelrotto since you can waste a day changing hotels?

Any advice would be appreciated

How’s fun!! Sounds like a great focus area for two weeks. From Venice, Have you ventured over to Burano by boat, or an easy local train (€4) to Padua?

Back in 2022, I visited Bolzano with the BOI tour group before we made our way up to our Alpi di suisi hotel. Bolzano does not warrant an overnight stay in my opinion (my focus was walking amongst the wildflowers and expansive views), but seeing Otzi the iceman and having lunch or gelato in town was great.

I went back the following year on my own, in between Venice and Salzburg. I suggest staying up toward the mountains too, bc summer temps are usually cooler there than down in Bolzano. I liked public transit for ease of use. FYI its very tight, twisty roads. Its straightforward to take the train from Venice to Bolzano, via Verona connection, then bus connection (#172?) up to Castelrotto/Kastelruth.

I splurged on Hotel Kastelruth and it included very hearty breakfast and seated dinner plus daily snacks. And a pool! They are near the bus that’s takes you to the chairlifts for hiking. They also offer a local guide, Viktor, who drove a small group of us over beyond Ortesei for a rather strenuous hike. Maybe Ortesei is nice too bc you can walk to the chairlifts? It’s connected to Bolzano by bus as well. Be aware of annual weekend long music event/concert in Alpi di suisi that may interfere with your hotel stay.

Id suggest to take the bus down to catch the train to Milan, and transfer for the local train up to Lake Como? Or rent the car in Bolzano if you prefer to drive to the lake, but parking is probably a burden there.

Plenty of planning time for you. You can look up hikes etc on the alpi di suisi website.
You’ll enjoy yourselves!

Thanks for the suggestions.
My thinking now is to take the train from Venice to Bolzano and just stay one night there. Then take the bus to Ortisei and spend 3 nights there. Castelrotto looks beautiful but it sounds like Ortisei is larger with more amenities for us to walk around and enjoy- especially if we don't have a car. Sounds like the bus system is fairly extensive and it would be nice not to have to bother with a car if we don't need it.
Any thoughts?

Hi are you still planning this trip? Are you taking train btw Venice and Bolzano? Sounds like a great plan to bus it up to mountains after your stay in Bolzano. It should feel very refreshing up there in the mountains near Alpi di Suisi. There’s some good online planning maps for hikes and lifts, huts, etc. All trails app may be helpful too?

Will you train to Milan/Lake Como? Which town will you visit there? I stayed on east side in Varenna.

All of these are stunning scenery! Summer will be warm (or hot, depending on your comfort level). I grew up on gulf coast but live in so cal so I felt hot on some days in June…. But a bandana filled with polymer beads really helped me maintain a cooler overall temp. It’s called a kool tie or something like that. Just get it wet in the morning and it works all day. Pairs well with sunscreen ;)
