Help planning 2 days in Turin

Hello,

Looking for some help with:

  1. How to get to Turin from Nice - which train website can we use to book our train tickets?
  2. Would like some input on thing to do in Turin off the beaten path.
  3. Any restaurant recommendations for food lovers.
  4. Any activities we can do together as a family with 2 - 15 year olds.

Thank you in advance for your inputs.

Thanks MaryPat, any ideas if FlexiBus is a good option? We have never traveled with that and they seem to have bus timings and better durations than trains.

One of the best restaurants I have ever been to is in Torino, Al Garamond, https://algaramond.it/. I'm surprised that it doesn't have a Michelin Star. The service and food certainly deserve it. Excellent wine list. A very nice cafe with excellent chocolate is Baratti & Milano. Go to the location at Piazza Castello. What I didn't do but wish I had was to go to the Egyptian Museum. It's considered the second most important Egyptian museum in the world.

Edit to add: There is of course the Shroud of Turin. You can't actually see it. But the church in which it is located has an interesting little video about it. It's at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

I’m still waiting to get to Turin (postponed once) but my research has included food writer Mimi Thorisson. She and her family live there and if you are okay using Instagram, she has an account there and has profiled restaurants that she recommends. She has mentioned that the food market there is the largest in Europe. The architecture and various museums seem well regarded and there is a car museum that might interest some of your family? Turin itself is ‘off the beaten path’ for most travellers to Italy but everyone that I’ve read who travelled there loved it.

I love Turin. A great city not inundated by tourists. Depending on your interests, I would recommend the Egyptian Museum, the National Automobile Museum, the Royal Palace and Armory and the National Cinema Museum located in the Mole Antonelliana.

My favorite restaurant in Torino is Pastificio Defilippis dal 1872, Via Giuseppe Luigi Lagrange, 39. Not Michelin type restaurant but great pasta dishes and reasonably priced. They seem to have staying power since they’ve been in business for over 150 years.

If FlixBus is convenient schedule-wise, don’t hesitate to use them. I’ve used them a few times and was happy with their service. No complaints. Purchase tickets ahead of time online to get best prices. They have a good website and app.

I travelled once in the other direction, Turin to Marseille through Nice, and I did take the Flixbus because the train takes sooooo long. It was smooth, and there are great views on the highway from Nice to Savona (sit on the right).

Thank you all for your replies.

I am being told on another forum entry (France) that the travel from Nice to Turin (our plan is to travel from Nice to Turin to spend 2 days there) during December might be a bit challenging since there is some train blockages due to landslides.

Any one know if the roads are reliable and flexibus is still an option this year?

The landslide that has closed the route from France into Italy (or vice versa) is nowhere near where you could be going to go between Nice and Italy.

It is further up, if you look on a map for Modane near the Frejus Tunnel, that is where the landslide is. It has indeed closed that rail line, but that's not the one you will use for this trip.

Both the auto museum and cinema museum are great!

One thing you can do in Torino is go to the high-end grocery store Eatily. It has wonderful groceries, thousands of different wines and often offers tastings (sparkling wines when we were there), and restaurants. It was a fun "temporary local" time for us.
