Does anyone have a recommendation on a guide or a group tour to Ostia Antica that is reasonably priced? We are a family of 5 so these tours can get expensive. Also, we will be returning from Sicily to Rome on Christmas Day before flying home the next day. Any ideas on what a Jewish family might do for the day, and places to eat?
No help on Guides, if nothing else, Rick's walking tour is pretty good. As for Christmas, I am sure things will be pretty closed up, but maybe consider going into the Jewish quarter, even though it is more of an historical quarter rather than a modern center of Jewish life; when we were in Rome a good number of restaurants and stores in the quarter were closed on Saturday, maybe indicating an active community. Besides that, I am sure that a large Catholic pilgrim community needs to be serviced over the holiday, so there should be options.
I read recently that you can telephone a local travel agent and book tour guides. You can ask questions; he will know the good guides who speak good English. He can guide you on selecting a fee.
Thanks Paul and Carl. You're right-- there will be tons of visitors in Rome who will need to eat too! Have you eaten at Giggetto's in the Jewish quarter? Heard anything about it? I may try to get a reservation there.
Paul-- That is a good tip. Know of any particular travel agents to call? I've emailed a few tour guides for sights in Rome, and haven't heard back from any yet.
