Help!! Northern Italy suggestions for the next few days! Ski trip

Hello - I'm seeking some suggestions for my husband and two adult sons. They are on a ski trip in the Dolomites (Val Gardena) and my older son smashed his toe on the stairs in their hotel. He cannot ski anymore....so, we need a plan B. My other son is studying in Palderno Del Grappa and their plan was to take him back to school by 1 pm on Monday and then drive back to Venice for their flight home on Tuesday.

Needless to say, my son is very bummed (they all are), so I'm trying to come up with a new plan for the weekend. My husband is willing to relocate to salvage some fun and see more of Italy! My son can walk without too much pain I think - just not an option to wear a ski boot and ski.

They may just drive back to Venice for at least one of the nights. I know Carnivale starts tomorrow. They spent one night there when they arrived. My other son could take the train back to school from Venice. Just seeking other ideas for this time of year - Verona? Trento? Lake Garda?

They have a rental car. They enjoy history, food, wine!

Thank you so much for any ideas!

Will6 - How about a trip to Innsbruck Austria which is nearby Val Gardena , Trieste Italy, or Bologna to make the next few days enjoyable.

I enjoyed spending a few days in Padua (very near Venice) back in 2015. It's a university town, so it's lively. It has a number of historic sites (must pre-book the Scrovegni Chapel) and a very atmospheric historic center--at least in the summer; I don't know about February. Padua is a convenient base for a jaunt to Vicenza (Palladian architecture) or even to Verona. Or Ferrara's also possible.

Bolzano, down in the valley, is a very pretty place with several museums, including the excellent one housing the Iceman.

I second the vote for Bolzano. We enjoyed seeing the museum with the Iceman, and there was some great local wine for anyone of local imbibing age. ;-)
