Even after much extended research on trains, I still messed up by booking a train from Campo Di Marte to La Spezia, not knowing how far the station was! The train is 7:30 on a Sunday morning. How do I get there without breaking the bank and in a timely fashion? It seems there’s not much help with a train from S?M? Novella on Sunday. They only have a Monday train! Help!
Call a taxi. According to Google maps it's only about 4 km.
If you are talking about the Regionale that departs Campo di Marte at 7:25, the next stop is Santa Maria Novella. Just board there. Nothing says you can't board at a station after where your ticket starts, just not before.
Thank you for your help!
If it is Regionale train you really should not be buying those tickets on-line since there is no advantage (discount, etc) to an oo-line purchase and those tickets come with more restrictions than if you bought the Regionale train ticket at the station.
Not sure what you mean by "only have a Monday train." ????? There is at least one train an hour, sometimes two, between Firenze SM and LaSpezia Centrale on Sunday. Plenty of trains on Sunday and more on Monday.
If you are talking about the Regionale that departs Campo di Marte at
7:25, the next stop is Santa Maria Novella.
But it's important to know exactly which train you booked? The 7:36 train is usually the one we recommend as it shaves a full hour off the time to La Spezia, and that train doesn't stop at Santa Maria Novella. It's also a Frecciabianca train so you would have reserved seats. You wouldn't have seat assignments on the 7:25 regionale. Which one did you book?
As Frank said, there 1 or 2 trains within every hour from S.M. Novella to Campo di Marte on Sundays so that's not an issue.
Hi Frank, and All who responded,
I was looking on Trenitalia’s website, but I think my mobile app was having issues, as I had some errors, too when looking up train information. I have spent many hours researching the trains, so when the app didn’t work right it made everything more complex. I appreciate all your great information on the Florence trains to La Spezia.
Had I known you can get on at the next stop, or one on the way to my destination this would have been a non issue. Now I am a more informed train traveler. Thank you, everyone for your helpful tips.
If you're on the regional train departing Campo di Marte station at 7:25, you can get on at SMN station about 10 minutes later. But if you're on the Freccia (high speed) train departing at 7:36, it does NOT stop at SMN station. In that case, take a taxi to Campo di Marte station as the bus connections that early on a Sunday morning are a bit complicated. The taxi ride won't be terribly expensive.
If you did indeed book the Frecciabianca from Camp di Marte at 7:36, there is a Regionale from Santa Maria Novella at 7:18 to CdM that takes 5 minutes and costs 1.50 EUR. Plenty of time to make the train to La Spezia. And that hardly breaks the bank.
Frank, I booked the 7:36.
Thank you, Sam.
That is a big help. I guess I am not a very good train travel agent. I’m so glad you are here to help with the info not in all my guide books! I think I’ve read most of them, and I still stink at this. I hope my vacation is better than my booking experience.
So you now understand that you need to take the earlier Regionale train from SMN to Campo di Marte and join your 07:36 Frecciabianca train in the carriage indicated on your ticket and move to the seats indicated on your tickets? And that the earlier Regionale has no reservations and you must validate the ticket for that Regionale before you board that train?
Is there anything else you are unsure about?
I think I understand. So if I buy a ticket for the/any regional train at the station, I need to validate my ticket before boarding, including an open ticket? Is that correct?
Am I correct that If I have an “e ticket” for a high speed train, I don’t need to validate them? I want to be sure.
Correct. If you have "Freccia" ticket, it should show a carriage number and seat number. The Regionale from SMN to CdM is open, so it needs to be validated before boarding.
So, you booked the FrecciaBianca from Firenze CM to La Spezia.
Excellent choice. That train is the fastest way to get to the Cinque Terre.
Now you need to get from your hotel near Piazza Duomo to Firenze CM early on a Sunday morning so that you get that train on time. The way to do it is by taxi. You will get there in ten minutes, and the fare won’t even be 15€.
Forget about going to SMN to catch a Regionale. Save yourself time and aggravation, especially if you have luggage, and enjoy the short taxi ride.
