HELP!!! Need help figuring out if the Eurail Pass is cheaper than purchasing individual tickets

Hello, I will be traveling to Friederichshafen Germany and then onto 4 other major cities. I plan to spend a few days in each city. There are 6 of us in my family. (2 adults, 4 children ages 12,14,17,18). We will be traveling from Friederichshafen Germany to Lauterbrunnen Switzerland, then to Venice, Rome and ending in Naples. Is it best to buy a Select 5 day pass since the 3 countries I am traveling are bordering? Or, would it be better to just buy a One Country Pass for Italy since that is the country that I will be moving around in the most (Venice, Rome, Naples...short visits to Amalfi Coast/Capri)? I am just not sure what it would cost for individual train tickets in Germany & Switzerland. I am sure we will most likely use the train for our daily trips in Germany & Switzerland, but I think I would purchase those tickets separate from the Eurail pass so I don't use up my days on my Eurail pass. I would save the 5 days for the major city to city traveling. Or, is it better to get a Swiss Rail Pass and then a One Country pass for Italy? This whole train thing has me so confused and I would like to be as economical as possible traveling with a family of 6. Thank you for any information/advice anyone can offer.

For italy, the best way to save money is to buy super saver tickets well in advance (120 days). They can be very cheap. But you must be very sure of your travel times! No changes or refunds.

Other countries I have no idea, but I would suspect that point to point is likely to be cheaper.

when we purchased eurail passes a few years ago, after we paid all the reservation fees. . . i think we would have done better buying individual tickets. germany is cheap to travel in, switzerland is NOT, italy is cheap if you take slow regional trains. if you want rough costs in italy the website is trenitalia.com, germany's is bahn.de, not sure on switzerland. when putting in dates and times, use dates within 7 days of today and some for further out. the 7 days out though will show you what the max is you will pay, and 90-120 days what the best could be. clear as mud? :)
