Help me with a “ Tour di Leonardo.”?

My husband and I will be in Italy in March, in Milan, Venice, and the vicinity of Naples. And then we will be in London. Can you help me put together a list of “Leonardo sites” we should try to see ? The Last Supper in Milan, of course, but there must be museums and other locations that have drawings, paintings, manuscripts, and other items on display, either in the permanent collection or as a special exhibit.

I know there is a Museo Leonardo di Vinci in Venice, so we will see that. And I thought I read something about Leonardo paintings at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, but I cannot find that again.

Anything more in Milan, besides the huge horse statue ( now a reproduction of the destroyed original)?

And in London, where do we look? British Library?

Our itinerary is set, and already crowded, so we cannot add time in Florence or visit his home town of Vinci. Maybe next time. . . .

Thanks for your help.

A science museum in Florence has Leo artifacts and devices, including his finger. And there's the town of Vinci with its own Leo museum.

In London, the National Gallery has Leonardo's "Virgin of the Rocks". And in the shop are comparison versions of that one and the one he painted for his "patron" which is displayed in the Louvre, along with differing theories about why he created two paintings nearly the same.

And then there's this, but I'm afraid you will be too late (unless they extend the exhibit!) from this tourist site.https://www.touristengland.com/da-vinci-exhibition-at-buckingham-palace-24-may-13-october-2019/

"The Da Vinci Exhibition at Buckingham Palace takes place between 24 May to 13 October 2019 in The Queen's Gallery. It will be the largest exhibition of Leonardo Da Vinci's works in over half a century, showcasing more than 200 of the Renaissance master's greatest drawings.

I had a list for Italy of Michelangelo’s works there and found all but one. It is a fun thing to do. Please post your Leonardo list,

Did you know that the name Leonardo da Vinci actualy means Leonardo born in the city of Vinci? Sadly it is not really close to Milan or Venice but you can visit the house where he was born and the have a pretty large exhibition. This is located in the town of Anchiano and is called La Casa Natale di Leonardo. Also Florence has a pretty large exibition called Museo Leonardo Da Vinci.

This is a great help, thanks. I will add the MIlan Museum of Science and Technology, and the British Library and National Gallery in London. And I know we have missed some great special exhibitions that were organized in honor of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo's death.

Gerri, I think you have solved the reference I saw to the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. Thanks.

And Fast Eddie, it is Galileo's preserved finger that is in a museum in Florence. ( Pretty macabre, to my thinking). We have been to Florence before and visited that museum but not to see the finger. Unfortunately there is no time for Florence on this trip, or for his birthplace Village of Vinci.

In Venice, along with the Leonardo exhibit near San Rocco, there is also a Leonardo exhibit in Campo San Barnaba.

In Milan, there is also the Leonardo 3D exhibition, with reproductive of done of his designs. There is the recently opened Sala delle Asse at the Sforza Castle, a room designed by Leonardo. And then the is the Vigna di Leonardo, the beautiful Villa where he stayed while he was painting the Last Supper. You can visit the house and the gardens.

I also think Gerri must have it right. I have the guide from the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. It doesn't have an index, but it's not large so I just went through and looked at all the illustrations - no Leonardos but a lot of beautiful Tintorettos.

I just googled Leonardo and went to the wiki page (isn't that the start for every quest these days? :-)

At the bottom there are several links that look like they'd be helpful.

You never know where you'll find a list. A few years ago, I reread The Agony and the Ecstasy before a trip to Italy and at the very end there was a list of all Michelangelo's extant works. I made a copy of the list and have managed to see all but 1 or 2.

Good additions to the list! I wonder if some of them, particularly the exhibit at Campo San Barnaba, might be temporary exhibitions related to the 500-year anniversary? I will try to track these down.

And I have learned that there are over 7000 pages of manuscripts, drawings, and other documents in the Queen's Royal Collection Trust:

They are housed at various locations, including the Royal Library at Windsor. Now I am on the hunt for more information about which of the venues are open to the public for viewing, and when . . .

I am also a fan of the quintessential Renaissance man and have visited Vinci twice. His museum there is fabulous, as engineering students around the world have recreated his fabulous instruments. But being in the village and walking the area, you get a sense of why nature played such an integral part of his inquisitive nature. I highly recommend trying to get there, it is beautiful and located west of Firenze.
