Help me imagine! Florence + Venice

Hi! I need some good advice on a leg of our 6 wk tour of europe.. Travellers are : myself (moderate travelling experience) & my girlfriend (who's never been off the continental US!). Our budget lets us spend time in some hostels with the occasional b&b if that gives you an idea of what kind of trip this is.

I'm stuck on the six days we'll have between -leaving- Rome Friday, June 1 and arriving in Barcelona one week later.

Must stops: Florence & Tuscany, Venice.

My 1st idea was
- Rome to Venice (2 days)
- On to Florence (2 days)
- and relax in Tuscany (properly booked accom. of course) until we leave for Barcelona.

The Problem: train tix add up quickly backtracking from Venice to Florence, or so it seems. I'm still a novice with trenitalia.com so maybe I'm over-exaggerating the cost difference.

Your ideas are much appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Joel,I'm not sure what you already have booked but what you could do is train rome to florence & tuscany, train to venice and fly ryan air, venice to barcelona. Otherwise a cheaper opition might be to fly rome to venice on ryan air for example there is a flight May 25 for only 10 euro including taxes, the problem with this is you have to consider the cost of traveling to and from the airport and the time it might eat up, taking the train would me more convenient. The routes you want are expensive because they are run by ES*(under train category on trenitalia) the high speed train, Look for ic or ir as they are regonial trains and cheaper, but don't cut venice out! I also wanted to recommend a couple places to stay a must for Rome is the beehive, www.the-beehive.com, and for Venice Alloggi Gerotto Calderan http://www.casagerottocalderan.com, both are clean near the train station and have both dorm and double rooms at good prices. These are two of my favortive hostels in Europe!

Joel - Lucca is a ton of fun AND has a great hostel right in the old walled city (the hostel is San Frediano - it has a great website). Certainly worth a visit. Have fun!

BTW, Beehive was sold out - not a surprise..

We're booked at Legends Hostel (formerly Alessandro Legends). It seems you have to prebook EVERY major city in the summer - at least for the places w/ good reps.
