Help me find the "unicorn" guide or tour for a day in Florence.

Hello fellow voyagers! I would like some help with finding a great tour / guide.

I am visiting Tuscany with my husband and teenage daughter in January. We want to spend a day in Florence, visiting the important art galleries (Accademia, Uffizi) and Pitti palace. I have been to Florence before and recall everything is walkable. That was before I got sick.

Problem is: I now have MECFS. On a good day, I can walk 300-400 metres before needing to rest. Other days... I'm lucky to walk half that. With lots of rest breaks to sit for about 5 minutes a time, I can do a day of sightseeing, on most days. I just don't know in advance if I'll have a good, average, or bad day. So I'm trying to plan the right visit for me for Florence.

I have done a lot of research and found some useful info, but not the "unicorn" tour or guide that I'm looking for.

I don't need a tour/guide to "skip the line" or buy tickets in advance for the galleries, because that's available to me with my disability. I also discovered that I can borrow a manual wheelchair in the Uffizzi and Pitti (none available in the Accademia though).

What I would like is a guide who can:

  1. spend about 3 hours taking us through the art galleries mentioned above and tell us the history of the artworks / galleries (bonus if they can swing some kind of folding chair that I can bring along), but then also:
  2. spend a few hours taking us to see sights around Florence in a vehicle (I see some tours have golf carts), stopping to discuss the history / architecture / cultural significance, take photos, and/or explore, and
  3. include some stops where there is great food to try - I'm thinking breads, cheeses, ham/salami, pasta, soups and/or gelato.
  4. And it's probably worth setting the expectation that we aren't wealthy so I can't afford a fully private tour at a cost of some thousands of dollars. Something at a reasonable cost would be appreciated, say less than $500 dollars (excluding cost of entry to the art galleries).

I have searched the web and am overwhelmed with literally thousands of tours and guides, all offering similar things, but none offering what I am looking for.

I'm also happy to split into 2 tours: say a morning in the galleries with one guide, and an afternoon seeing the sights and sampling foods. Or something similar. But a vehicle is really important, as I would hate to miss out because I'm having a day where I just can't walk as much as I want to, to experience everything.

I'll be very grateful for any and all suggestions on finding the right tour or guide. Grazie mille!

One thought I had was that you book a commercially available golf cart tour for the afternoon which I presume would be at somewhat reasonable rates.

I really don’t see how you would successful in the museums on anything but a private tour. I have a friend whose husband has Parkinson’s and that is what they now do. He cannot keep up with a regular organized tour. Now they have been traveling with her sister and husband so they split the cost.

If the cost is unmanageable, then I would look to do it in your own with an audioguide.

I highly recommend Anna Piperato, link below:

https://www.sienaitalytours.com/

Her PhD in art history sets her apart from other tour guides. Based in nearby Siena, Anna provides excellent customized tours in Florence. Anna's knowledge and energy equally applies to shopping and restaurants.

Although Anna does not provide automobile, self-owned cars are a hinderance in Florence. Recommend discussing customized full-day Florence itinerary with Anna, and providing physical limitations. Anna can fill in the gaps with hailing a taxi.

Anna is wonderful!! She was our guide for a visit to Florence a few years ago and we have stayed in touch. If she is available I’m sure she will be to customize for your needs. She is an American who has lived in Siena for years.

I used Context Travel for an excellent tour of the Uffizi. They offer private and very small group tours (my tour ended up with only two people!) Perhaps they could arrange a custom tour for you if none of their standard tours work for you.

In 2022 I visited Florence and arranged for 2 tours through Florence with Flair (https://florencewithflair.com/). I was traveling solo so Elena asked me some questions to see what I was interested in and then posed some ideas. I split things into 2 tours - one a garden tour the other a museum tour. I can't remember the name of the delightful woman I went to the museums with. But this was such a great experience because though we had a plan outlined, during each tour we just checked in with each other and stayed in some places longer and left some places a little sooner. I felt like I was walking around with a local friend.

The flexibility that I had with Elena was really great and it sounds like maybe this would be a good fit for you.

I hope that you have a wonderful trip!
