Help me fill in my itinerary: Florence - CT - Siena

Hello all. We are meeting up with family in Siena for a family reunion this summer. We will have one week there and plan to do some day trips from Siena.

We are arriving a week early and are planning:

Sat PM - arrive FLR, stay in Florence 3 nights
Sunday - Florence
Monday - Florence
Tues - Train to CT. Which town do you recommend as our base? We are young, adventurous and prioritize atmosphere over comfort. I suspect 4 nights in CT is too many. How are other towns such as Portovenere? Would like to spend as much time near the water as possible.
Wed - ?
Thurs - ?
Fri. - ?
Sat - train to Siena - spending the day in Lucca along the way

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Monterrroso al mare is a gd base on water with plenty of lodging options. Bk early prob 2 full days. You can sometimes kayak if seas are calm or ferry from one village to the other and of course hike the trail thru the 5 villages. Sta margarita ligure on train rte and
very nr CT also is a great seaside town with many options but larger and more developed.

Thanks. Another question - should we skip CT and go to Elba instead? Time to do both?

If you like the sea, 4 nights at the Cinque Terre is not too long. It's 3 full days. You can hike all the way to Portovenere if you want. You can bike through the bike path from Levanto. You can kayak. Spend a lazy day at the beach. Go to S.Margherita by train and walk to Portofino and to Paraggi (great beach).
You can visit Monte Marcello and Lerici. Or you can ride a train to Carrara and take an organized jeep excursion to the marble caves.

You can't do both Cinque Terre and Elba in 4 nights. Elba is gorgeous, but once on the island you really need a car because the buses aren't too frequent. Also getting to it is time consuming and from Florence takes the whole day, when everything is said and done.
