Help me choose.....

I will be cruising out of Venice next year and would like to start planning my pre cruise days. I would like to see Cinque Terre primarily. These are the two itineraries I came up with and would like comments and opinions on this, especially if you have done the train portion.

5/22 Arrive Florence or 5/22 Arrive Milan train to CT

5/23 Florence or 5/23 CT

5/24 Train to CT or 5/24 CT am then train to Florence

5/25 Ct overnight or 5/25 Florence

5/26 Ct to Venice or 5/26 Train to Venice

5/27 Venice overnight or 5/27 Venice

5/28 Venice to port 5/28 Venice to port

Your 'first'(?) schedule, i.e., Florence- CT-Venice is more efficient

The train from Milan to CT is 3.5 hours, if memory serves. That is brutal after a long airplane journey. CT to Venice is going to be a long journey as well. I'd suggest taking a route that may take longer in time but has fewer changes in trains. You lower your odds of potentially missing a connection, having to haul bags, find the correct line, getting a choice seat, etc.

Word of warning: The trains in CT are not only overloaded during the day (worst part of CT in my opinion) but the early morning departures can be a bit of a crowd as well. Keep that in mind and queue early.
