Hello,
Flying to Rome via NY and then Madrid on Air Iberia. I just called and the carry on luggage is limited to 22lbs + a purse or briefcase. Is this doable with the Rick Steves convirtible carry on? Or do you think it will be too heavy.
Thanks a lot! Im getting nervous now as I am leaving in 12 days.
It is do-able, depending on how you pack. Get all your stuff together that you want to bring and hop on the scale. The only problem is that on the way home, you may have more than you brought in the first place. We were higher on the way home, so we dumped the shampoo etc that we didnt really need, and we wore the heavy stuff on the plane.
Are you taking checked luggage too? Then you'd better check the limits on them. Although on flights to and from North America the max is usually 50 lbs each for 2 suitcases, the max on European flights (among others) is generally 1 suitcase, 44 lb.
I don't mind checking my luggage on the way home if it is heavier. I would like to carry on for the way there so we can be on our way once we land and so I don't have to worry about lost luggage when on a vacation.
I will definitely weigh the bag before I go to see, and if I cant go under 22lbs, I will bring a bigger suitcase, with plenty of clothes and toiletries that I can wheel around with me. I just don't want to be surprised at the airport after the effort of packing very light to have to check anyway.
The good way to get around of not having enough room or a bag being heavier on return because of what you have bought on your trip is to bring some clothes that you can toss out at the end of your trip. I usually bring old t-shirts and underwear and toss them before the trip home. This frees up space on the trip home.

I'm a light packer. With the new carry on rules I decided to weigh my pack to see how I was doing. I weighed on a business trip and a personal trip. It weighed in at 15 lbs. both times.
I usually bring (including what I wear on the plane) 4 bottoms (two pants, one warm up, and a pair of swim trunks/shorts), 5 tops (2 t-shirts and 3 button up shirts), two light sweaters and a rain-shell, three pairs of socks and underwear, and two pairs of shoes along with my shave kit and sundries in a convertible carry-on by Ebags.
My wife doesn't pack exactly the same as I do, but packs her stuff in one roll-on bag. The wheels in a roll-on take up space and add weight but it should still be doable.
The trick is to make anything you pack be useful in multiple ways. Don't think in terms of how much you can pack, think how small you can make your load. When you are traveling, you will be glad you kept it light.
Most of us,including RS, suggests that a convertible pack be nor more than 20 pounds. Most of us try to go lighter.
Do you have a packing list? If so, pack the bag and weigh it. Then put it on and see how well you handle it. If it's too heavy, it's time to lose things. For every item you take, ask yourself, will you use it enough times to warrant carrying it around your entire trip. Take less clothes and wash more often. Take only enough toiletries to get you started and buy along the way. (U.S. brand are available in Europe.)
DO NOT EXPAND THE BAG BEFORE LEAVING. If you have to, then you are taking way too much and not trying to travel light.
I just did 3 weeks with that bag, and while it was great, it is HEAVY after carrying it up stairs, on boats, trains, taxi's, etc. Be smart, leave heavy things at home, wear less, wash more. Your body will thank you.
