Try B & B University near Termini. It is in a very safe building, clean and will have everything you need.

Hey Gabi,
Hubbie & I are spending 4 nights in Rome at B&B Bologna. It comes highly recommended on tripadvisor.com We are paying 75E per night - a great price for Rome. We've emailed the owner a few times and he has promptly replied and always been very friendly. We did, however, try to write in Italian as much as possible. Use Rick Steve's guide book - at the back is a great list of helpful terms. Hope this helps! :)

Not sure what is cheap accom to you, but we just came back from Italy and stayed in "Suite Dreams" in Rome for thew last 3 nights. Located at Via Modena 5, just off Via Nazionale near Piazza Republica. The Train station is 6-7 minutes walk away. Brand new and modern, very clean, excellent rooms, helpful hosts [Federico and Pietro-Francesco], very good breakfast icluded, good location. We paid 130E /night, not cheap elsewhere but in Rome....
Enjoy,
Steve

We stayed at the convent Suore di Santa Elisabetta near the Termini and St. Maria Magiore. It cost 83euros for 2 adults in a large room with a bath, basic european breakfast included (excellent coffee). Very safe, clean, and quiet. Run by Polish nuns, but a woman at the front office speaks fluent English. They have a safe for small valuables in the office.
More information at email ist.it.s.elisabetta@libero.it
Check tripadvisor.com reviews.

A few years ago, we stayed at Hotel dei Mille (Via dei Mille 7, Rome, Telephone: 39 06 49 13 13). It is run by nuns and is extremely clean and well kept. It doesn't have all the amenities of a typical hotel, but the breakfast is adequate, the beds are comfortable and clean and the location is within minutes of Termini. A good choice for inexpensive accommodation in Rome. Bon voyage!

Hi Gabi, just returned from Rome on May 24 we, hubby and I,stayed at the Beehive as suggested in Rick's book. Nice place but, no TV, no breakfast and the bathroom and toilet are down the hall. 80E. We also stayed at Scott House, half a block from the Termini, it is on Venere.com. 80E also, but it came with a TV, breakfast and private bathroom. on the 4th floor of a building, but it has an elevator. the people were really nice and they seem to have pretty strick rules re noise and drinking in the rooms. the rooms are pretty basic and the walls fairly thin, but I thought the value was good for the price. our room faced the street, but the windows were new and heavy and blocked out the noise. cheap internet cafe across the street. have fun. My husband and I stayed at Hotel Giardino. It is not that far from the Termini area. Even with all of our luggage we took a bus from the Termini to the hotel. Bus 40 I believe. It is in the perfect location for walking to places. It was 130 euros per night ( I emailed and told her I had the Rick Steve's Book). Kate at the front desk would give you transportation details I am sure. We would go back there in a heart beat!

I have stayed at Hotel Italia which is about a 15 minute walk from the train station. It's a great location for walking to many of the sites. Their rates range from 70 - 130 Euros per night for a double room depending on season.

i stayed at casa olmata in about 10 minutes walk from the termini, near st. maria magiorre (sp?). I paid 30 euros a night for my own room with a shared bathroom. it was basic, but the owners were nice, and they gave you a free breakfast (toast, juice, yogart, apple, and little chocolate soft bar) each morning. There have been some so-so reviews for this hostel, but my stay was fine. its not big on extras so if you are looking for something a bit more hotelish i would suggest looking elsewhere. but you can;t beat the price and its located near a police station so its safe enough. its about 10 to 15 minute walk to the colleseum.
