Help! I'm stuck in towns in Campania (et al.): Need advice on tour operator of some sort

My husband and I are making our way through southern Italy as I type. Our original plan was to rent a car and drive out to the Calabria/Basilicata border and stay in an agriturismo. But we have decided it would be too stressful to drive as we have had bad experiences driving outside the U.S. in the past.

I know that we are deep in the off-season and this is also very "last minute" but I am hoping someone can tell me of a tour operator who could pick us up from somewhere and take us out to do a little rural exploring (e.g. hiking). We are specifically thinking of heading to Palermo in 4 - 5 days but would be interested in any suggestions for Sicily, Calabria or Basilicata. (Judging from what I've read, Palermo might be great for a few days but then we'll be dying for a respite. We also recently met a fellow English-speaking traveler who said driving in Sicily was very difficult.)

Many thanks for any recommendations.

Driving in Sicily is not difficult except in the major cities (ZTL zones, narrow streets, lots of traffic. Sorry I don't have a tour recommendation for you, but there is Madonie National Park between Palermo and Cefalu; try bestofsicily.com for suggestions.

boop,

For tours in Calabria, you might try contacting THIS firm in Catanzaro. If they're not able to provide a tour on short notice, they may be able to offer some suggestions.

Good luck and happy travels!

Thanks to all who replied. Frances -- that Best of Sicily website looks chock full of info. Unfortunately, the bed and breakfast I am staying at does not have WiFi so I am using a PC at a gas station and do not want to spend more time here than I have to. ;0

Are you still looking for a tour operator? Email these people: [email protected]

Last year, they were able to set up a last-minute wine tour for us in Puglia, and I know they have tours elsewhere. They are very flexible and helpful.

Thanks to all who replied. I think we are going to try to catch a ferry from Salerno to Palermo and spend our last week in Palermo. (Trying to book passage on the boat has been a mysterious process.)

I just hope Palermo is not too overwhelming. If the ferry does not work out, it's north to Firenze.
