Help Getting From Italy to Switzerland

I will be traveling this July and going from Varenna on Lake Como to Gruyères Switzerland. My plan is to take the train from Varenna to Milan then Milan to Montreux then on to Gruyères. This will be my first trip to Europe in some time and I'm not familiar with purchasing tickets. Can I go to the Varenna station a few days in advance and purchase a ticket that will get us through to Gruyères or do I need to purchase the tickets separate for the different countries? Can I purchase the ticket even earlier so we are sure that we have tickets? If I did the purchase online what site do you suggest?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Kevin

Use the sites of the companies that run the trains: trenitalia.com/en.html and sbb.ch There is no need to pay more on some re-seller's site.

Yo'll take a Regionale train from Varenna-Esino to Milano Centrale. AIl trains marked with an R (for Regionale) or RV (regionale veloce) have no reserved seats and can't sell out. There is no difference between getting Regionale tickets a few days or a few minutes in advance. Online or at any Trenitalia station.

The few international EC direct trains from Milan to Montreux have only reserved seats (at least on the Italian side of the border). The seat reservation is always included in the ticket on trenitalia.com

You can save up to 35 Euro per person buying in advance the discounted EC tickets. Be careful: those tickets are so cheap because changes are restricted and no refunds are possible.

Asking a conductor to let you board and earlier/different train on the day of travel is pointless: humans have no way to bypass the rules of discounted tickets saved into the system. In short: get a discounted EC ticket only when your plans are set in stone, you can't change your mind once you have clicked the "BUY" button on trenitalia.com

I know nothing about the Montreux-Gruyères leg, but you must get Swiss trains tickets on the swiss site: sbb.ch

The train from Varenna to Milan is not even on the schedule yet. It is a regional train and never sells out. Probably early June it will show up on the schedule.

You could buy the Milano Centrale to Gruyeres leg now ifyou wanted. 11:20 am departure looks good. The regional train from Varenna should depart at 8:25 am and arrive at Milano Centrale at 9:40 am per the current schedule.

AFAIK, there is no ticket office at the unmanned Varenna-Esino rail station. There is a travel agency around the corner and down the hill that sells train tickets, but it's only open during business hours.
