Help forgot book section!

RS friends I need your help. I tore out the pages for Siena and left them at home. We are 3 seniors in Siena and will be leaving for Sorrento on Monday the 22nd. I have the info on taking the train. But was wondering if the bus would be more direct and convenient. Met some people here and they say the bus is the way to go. But what I pull up takes all day. Could somebody please help us? Thanks!

according to the website Rome2Rio for transportation costs and times the bus from Siena to Rome to Sorennto is about $50 and takes about 8 hours 29 min. While the train from Siena - Florence - Garibaldi - Sorrento is about $116 and 6 hours. You can probably shave off about 30 min from that with the bus from Siena to Florence, and some more cost by booking ahead on the high speed train ahead of time.

I haven't traveled down that far from tuscany directly, all the times were from Rome.

The bus option is to take a Sena bus from Siena to Roma Tiburtina station:

http://autolinee.baltour.it/Orari-Autobus/Siena/Roma/7-87-81/9-1.html
It shows 24 euro pp. There are several a day, but let's say you leave comfortably at 10:30am you arrive at Rome at 13:27.

Once you reach Roma Tiburtina, you might want to take the Marozzi bus which takes you to Sorrento from Roma Tiburtina.
Marozzi has only 2 buses a day from Rome to Sorrento. The afternoon bus departs at 15:00 and arrives at Sorrento at 19:00.
The cost is 18.50 euro.
http://www.marozzivt.it/script/biglietteria.aspx?tipobigl=marozzi

So you could potentially get there in less than 9 hours for less than 50 euro.

The train is faster but it requires more train changes and probably more money (I think it's too late for discounted high speed tickets).

However if it was me, considering there are 3 of you, I would definitely rent a car in Siena and drive to Sorrento. Then in Sorrento you can return the car, since several agencies are there. It's all freeway except for the last 8 or 9 km from Castellammare di Stabia to Sorrento, where you are on a two lane highway. You'll be there in less than 5 hours and with 100-120 euro total you pay rental plus gas and tolls.

With 3 of you, and with the motorways so straightforward, if you limit the car use to going straight to Sorrento from Siena I agree with Roberto's suggestion, and for the reasons given. I'd say that at the end of the day you will be more relaxed, faster, and, best of all, with a few extra euros in your pocket.

Nobody wants to do the car rental option. So it's either bus or train. Did find on the Trentalia web site an affordable option with a bus from Siena to Chiusi- Chianciano and then switch to a train from there to Naples. Then catch the train to Sorrento. Has anybody done that one?

Hi Susan. Here's the bus information for Siena from the Italy book. If you prefer the bus, maybe take that as far as Naples and then jump on the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento, or take a boat from Naples. I would personally rather take the train to Naples, about 5.5 hours with a change in Florence.

The main bus companies are Tiemme/Siena Mobilità (formerly called Tra-In; mostly handles buses to regional destinations, tel. 0577-204-111, www.sienamobilita.it) and Sena/Baltour (for long-distance connections, tel. 0861-199-1900, www.baltour.it). On schedules, the fastest buses are marked rapida. I’d stick with these. Most buses depart Siena from Piazza Gramsci; others leave from the train station (confirm when you buy your ticket).

Tiemme/Siena Mobilità Buses to: Florence (roughly 2/hour, 1.25-hour rapida/via superstrada buses are faster than the train, avoid the 2-hour ordinaria buses unless you have time to enjoy the beautiful scenery en route; if there are lines at bus-ticket office, tickets also available at tobacco shops/tabacchi; generally leaves from Piazza Gramsci as well as train station), San Gimignano (8/day direct, on Sun must change in Poggibonsi, 1.25 hours, leaves from Piazza Gramsci), Volterra (4/day Mon-Sat, no buses on Sun, 2 hours, change in Colle di Val d’Elsa, leaves from Piazza Gramsci), Montepulciano (6-8/day, none on Sun, 1.25 hours, leaves from train station), Pienza (6/day, none on Sun, 1.5 hours, leaves from train station), Montalcino (6/day Mon-Sat, 4/day Sun, 1.25 hours, leaves from train station or Piazza del Sale), and Pisa’s Galileo Galilei Airport (3/day, 1.75 hours, one direct, two via Poggibonsi).

Sena/Baltour Buses to: Rome (9-10/day, 3 hours, from Piazza Gramsci, arrives at Rome’s Tiburtina station on Metro line B with easy connections to the central Termini train station), Naples (2/day, 6.5 hours, one at 17:00 and an overnight bus that departs at 23:59), Milan (6/day, 4 hours, departs from Piazza Gramsci, arrives at Milan’s Cadorna Station with Metro access and direct trains to Malpensa Airport), or Assisi (daily at 17:30, 1.75 hours, departs from Siena train station, arrives at Assisi Santa Maria degli Angeli; from there it’s a 10-minute taxi/bus ride uphill to city center).

Tickets and Information: You can buy tickets in the underground passageway (called Sottopassaggio la Lizza) beneath Piazza Gramsci--look for stairwells in front of NH Excelsior Hotel. The larger office (marked Siena Mobilità) handles Tiemme/Siena Mobilità buses (Mon-Fri 6:30-19:30, Sat-Sun 7:00-19:30). The smaller one is for Sena/Baltour buses (Mon-Sat 8:30-19:45; on Sun, when the Sena/Baltour bus ticket office is closed, buy tickets next door at Tiemme/Siena Mobilità office; Sena/Baltour office also has a desk selling Eurolines tickets for bus connections to other countries). Tiemme/Siena Mobilità is cash-only; Sena/Baltour accepts credit cards. You can also get tickets for both Tiemme/Siena Mobilità buses and Sena/Baltour buses at the train station (look for bus-ticket kiosk just inside main door). If necessary, you can buy tickets from the driver, but it costs €3-5 extra.

The train from Naples to Sorrento is the Circumvesuviana, which can be extremely crowded. Passengers (not just tourists) must be vigilant about their belongings when there is standing room only, otherwise it's okay. Sorrento is the last stop. Station is downstairs from Napoli Centrale.
