We are leaving for Italy soon and my husband just fell off a ladder and hurt his leg pretty bad. Doctor says we can still go, however, I am worried about him getting around. He needs to stay off his leg, so we might need a wheelchair. We have one here but will be renting a car part of the time and there will not be room. Are there places to rent wheelchairs? Does anyone have suggestions!
Karen, sorry about your husband's injury. I've seen wheelchairs at some large museums, you should arrange for one in advance. If you are looking for a rental for the entire time that you are in Italy, there are some websites for travelers with disabilities (temporary or permanent), I found a website "Disabled Travelers Guide to the World" with a section on Italy. Since this is a temporary disability, you may not be able to think of everything in advance that you might encounter. The website starts out with lists of tips for general travel, go directly to the Italy page (click on the photo toward the bottom of the home page). Unfortunately, lots of sites in Italy involve stairs (make sure your hotels have elevators). Most large train stations have an elevator for people who have limited mobility -in some stations it's open to anyone, in others you need a railroad staff person to unlock it for you. You may need to have someone from the train station walk you across the tracks if there is no elevator.
Look on graffiti wall section on this site and there is a section on traveling with disabilities. Also can you call your airline and see if you can get bulkhead seats, that would give him more room to stretch his leg, assuming you are going coach of course.
Thank you very much for your response on my questions. Your response have been very helpful.
