Hello, We will be staying for two nights in Varenna, and then would like to rent a car to reach Tuscany, where we stay for five days, and then drop off the car in Venice, where we will be staying three nights. It appears that no rental car companies are located in Varenna, so I am wondering if it would be better to rent in Como or Lecco, which appear to have rental car locations. (better being easier, more convenient, cheaper) Also, any information or advice on rental companies to use (or not use)? Tips on dropping off a rental car in Venice? Thank you!
Lecco is a better choice for location. MIT isonly 20 minutes away on the train going back to Milan. Como is on theater side of the lake and it takes about 2 hours by train. Mi didn't check ferry schedules but it is not a short trip as Como is way south. You might have to change at Bellagio.
There are car rentals at La Spezia, which is a short train ride from Varenna. Whether this is better than Como would depend on the rest of your itinerary.
The tip that has come up here several times about returning a car in Venice is that if you're returning to Piazzale Roma (easy and convenient), be SURE to observe the speed limit on the causeway connecting it to the mainland. There are speed cameras, and several posters have gotten tickets months later. EDIT: Geography mistake now removed.
@Harold, "There are car rentals at La Spezia, which is a short train ride from Varenna." La Spezia is at least five hours or so from Varenna, so not too "short" of a train ride. Did you mean Vernazza? Cheers!
"Did you mean Vernazza?" Yes, I did. Sorry for the mistake! Original post now corrected. Thanks, Ken, for catching that. I wouldn't want anyone to go to the wrong place.
