Help! December on Amalfi

We have our Rick Steve's Book and were hoping to stay in Positano (our family's first trip to Italy). We are very excited. But, we are having trouble finding places to stay that are open in December.

Has anybody had any good lodging experiences in December to share? We would greatly appreciate all suggestions.

Unless you're going to meet long-lost family in Positano, I really don't understand why you'd go in December. It's a summer resort town and buttons up in the winter.

Ditto what Doug says, although I think the views and the quiet do still sound charming. You'll get to see how the locals really live when they arent bombarded by tourists!

Have you looked at the Eden Roc Hotel? I once stayed there and found it to be excellent. Otherwise I know a great agruturismo in neary Furore called Serafina (www.agriturismoserafina.it). They do remain open year round, but this is a farm stay set into the cliffs of the coast (has sea views), a bit different than chic positano.

I appreciate your help.

For our family's first trip to Italy we had planned to spend the first and last part of the trip in Rome.

In the middle we planned to explore one other part of the country (so as not to spread our days too thinly with travel) We have four days that we thought we would travel south and visit Pompeii and Paestum, with Amalfi/Positano as our place to stay.

Is this a bad plan for December?

Would you head north to Florence/Venice instead?

Thanks!!

As great as Pompeii and Paestum are, I truly would think that Florence and the North may be a better choice. Save the Amalfi Coast for another trip during the warm months, really anytime from April to October is pleasant on the coast.
If not, keep your plan as is, just prepare for cold and possibly rainy weather. Bring a good book to read while looking out at the stunning views from your hotel etc.

In December many travelers go to areas that provide attractions that are mainly indoors, where the weather doesn't matter.

This website gives an accurate idea of what kind of weather to expect in December

http://www.wunderground.com/tripplanner/index.asp

you input a location and the dates (day & month, not year) you'll be there, and the site shows you what the weather the last 10 years has been at the location on those dates.

Using that info, your expectation of the weather is at least based on some data and may help you decide whether to spend your December in a place where the attractions are mainly outdoor activities or indoor activities, and what kind of clothing to bring.
