Hello! Not my first time in Italy, but it's been 19 years. April visit, one week, flying into and out of Rome. 16yo's first time. Pretty sure we want to spend a couple of days in the Naples area (Pompeii, Herculaneum, quick drive through an ancestral town outside Naples, maybe Sorrento?). Should we do that right away, or stay in Rome for a couple of days first? Make this a day trip? Suggestions appreciated. I am having decision paralysis!
Always leave the place of departure flight as last destination in your itinerary.
Therefore go immediately to Naples/Sorrento upon landing, then return to Rome for the last few nights of your trip before your flight back.
From Rome Termini station to Naples it is a quick 70 min high speed train ride.
Roma Termini is a 30 min train ride from the airport (Leonardo Express train)
If you want to proceed to Sorrento from Naples, there is a commuter train called "Circumvesuviana" which covers the distance from Naples to Sorrento in a little over one hour. Pompeii and Herculaneum are along the same train line between Naples and Sorrento.
Of course you can also take a private car transfer but it will cost you 100 euro rather than about 5 euro with the train.
Do not rent a car in Naples. You won't need it for what you need, and it's a hassle to have one. Use the train (and the bus from Sorrento to the Amalfi Coast, if you plan to visit the Amalfi Coast).
I agree going to Pompeii, sorrento right when u land. We rented a car and drove to sorrento and did Pompeii (I think we stayed two nights in sorrento) and then drove back to Rome, ditched the car and then stayed in Rome the rest of the trip and flew home from Rome.
