Help

Ok, so I'm going crazy trying to figure out where to stay in almafi coast! I'm coming from Rome, wanted to stay in postiano but everything is getting booked up! I'm going September 22 thru 26. Is staying in iichia to far from postiano and Capri? If I stayed in ischia, can I rent my own boat and check out everything? Please advise! Thanks krys

You would not rent a boat from Ischia to the coast...you could take a day tour boat to Positano and or Capri...there are rough seas and a small boat is not going to do well with such a crossing, also makes no sense at all which you will realize if you map it or when you get there...

If you are arriving in Naples, you could do this...stay in Naples by train station I recommend Una Hotel Napoli, one night...from here take a ferry or car service to Positano for the day, stay in Naples that first night. Early morning go to Ischia for 3 amazing nights...

Check you in box...Ischia has tons to offer..and is incredibly charming.

I doubt that you'll be able to rent a "rubber boat", nor would that be a good idea for travel between Ischia, Capri and Positano (especially to Capri).

You might consider staying in Sorrento instead, as that's accessible by rail. While there you can....

  • Visit Capri via Ferry (which will be safer than a small rubber boat)
  • Visit Positano by Taxi or Bus.
  • Visit Pompeii and / or Herculaneum if you're interested.

The Ischia-to-Capri or Positano "rubber boat" idea is not going to happen: too small for that sort of distance, and would take far too long to get there.

Stay in Sorrento where you'd have more transport options to choose from to get around the coast. To expand on Ken's list:

Travel from Naples to Sorrento via train, bus or ferry
Visit Capri via ferry
Visit Positano by taxi or bus or ferry
Visit Pompeii and / or Herculaneum by train if you're interested.
Visit Amalfi by bus or ferry

Ferries can't dock in Positano when the seas are too rough so it can be beneficial to have a range of options.

But scrapping the Amalfi/ Sorrentine for a stay on Ischia would work as well. It all depends on what you want to do while in the region.

Traveling from Ischia to the Amalfi coast by dingy would be little short of madness. It's over 22 miles from Ischia to Sorrneto which is on the near side of the Sorrentine peninsula. That's 22 miles in an open dingy, presumably with no radio, over some of the busiest waters in the Mediterranean. Thousands of tons of commercial shipping go through these waters every day, not to mention hydrofoils, regular ferries, fishing vessels and countless yachts of every size. These are no foolin' serious waters.
