Help: 3-days with a car in North Italy

Hi,

I'm in the midst of planning a trip around North Italy and will be hiring a car for the last three/four days of it. We'll be in Verona on Wednesday 21th September so plan to hire from there and then head west towards Bergamo for our flight home on Saturday 24th, so ideally would like to drop car off on the Friday evening.

It will be our first time in Italy - both experienced drivers although we'll be renting a small, basic car (not sure if that affects where we go, but probably means no off road trips) so wondering if anyone has any thoughts for a good route.

Would love any help!

I've always been stuck with public transportation in Italy, but others have recommended driving through the Dolomites, and it is a beautiful area. Although you can visit it by bus, your car would give you more flexibility, and you could cover more ground. The area is primarily German-speaking, and it's quite different from other parts of northern Italy.

You might consider Vicenza and the area around Vicenza for a lovely town, and especially if you like Palladian architecture, like the Rotunda.

Are you aware of the various money traps to avoid driving in Italy?

Assume you depart from Milan (MXP).

Lake Como and drop the car at MXP.

Are you flying out of BGY? You must be taking Ryanair to the UK?

It looks like you have 2 nights only (Wed and Thu night) available.
After visiting Verona, see the nearby Lake Garda. Spend the two nights in the northern side of the lake. (Malcesine, Riva, Limone, etc.).
On Friday drive to Bergamo and drop off the car. Visit Bergamo Alta (Upper Bergamo) the afternoon and evening of arrival. The next day take a taxi to the airport.

If you are actually flying out of Milan MXP, then drive to Lake Maggiore (Stresa is good) and spend your nights there. It's only 35-45 min from the MXP airport. Return the car at MXP the morning you depart (therefore spend 3 nights there). Give yourself enough time to drive to the airport and return the car.

If you stay in Bergamo, there is a shuttle bus to the airport.
