Help, 16 days to visit Rome and South Italy

I have done northern Italy twice and am very familiar. But this seems much harder to plan. We want to do Rome, Amalfi and anywhere in between. Rome seems hectic but have to do, then from there south and back to Rome to fly home.
Thanks for input!

i would start in Sorrento and base from there. If you can fly into Naples and out of Rome, that would be best. You can easily visit Pompeii, Posiitano, Amalfi, Paestum, Capri and Naples from Sorrento. I think 5 nights there will give you plenty of time to see most of the area. I am not sure where you have been in Northern Italy, but you can then travel to Umbria and see some of the towns there. Good choices are Assisi and Orvieto. I would spend 3 nights here and then the rest of the time in Rome. This will give you a good deal of time in Rome to see the major sights. You could also consider taking a short flight to Sicily for a few nights. There is plenty to see and do there as well.

The Castle at Caserta is great too! You could do Sorrento for part of your trip, to hit Capri, Naples, Ischia, Herculaneum, and Pompeii and then pick a city on the Amalfi Coast side to do Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, & Paestum.......I like Salerno for that side, mostly only 1 mode of transport for any of those locations....

I am a big fan of Salerno, and if you were done with "the resort town" life, its a living and breathing normal Italian city with a great historical center, and wonderful sites to see.......the seawalk is gorgeous and the corso (pedestrian only shopping street) is so fun!
