Can someone recommend a nice town to stay in the "heel". Beaches ?
I usually stay on one of the toenails, but here you are:
Just don’t stay in Taranto. A friend of mine who served in the Italian Navy in Taranto told me you don’t want to be in Taranto because it’s that area of a boot (the corner between the heel and the outsole) where it is almost impossible to clean off the dung when you happen to step on one. He meant that Taranto is a sh…ty place and there is no way to improve it. It is the seat of the largest steel factory in Europe (very recently closed) and one of the most polluted industrial sites in the world.
We stayed in Otranto ( not to be confused with Taranto!) and Polignano à Mare in 2012. Really enjoyed both towns and both had beaches. There is also a nice beach just up the coast from Otranto at Torre dell' Orso.
From Otranto we took a day trip to Gallipoli, had lunch there and then drove back along the coastal road , stopped for a swim at a lovely beach , stopped again for a quick peek at Leuca and then back up the coastal road to Otranto.
Matera, Alberobello and Martina Franca are also worth visiting in Puglia, but they are not on the coast - so no beaches.
