Heart of Tuscany tour

Hello, we will be in Italy in August, with three days in Montepulciano. Initially we had not planned on having a car, but after further research think that having one for a day or two to see the surrounding countryside would be a nice addition to our trip. That being said, if we opt not to rent, are there day tours that leave Montepulciano that might be similar to what Rick Steves outlines in his Tuscany book? We would like to see some beautiful scenery, perhaps a winery, a small town or two. The rest of our trip is Rome, Siena, Florence and CT and had planned on travelling between all via train/bus. Insight/advice appreciated! :-)

We have always rented a car for visiting Tuscany and highly recommend it. I really can’t imagine seeing this rural area any other way.
