Heat in Rome

I've been reading about the heat wave and forest fires in Italy. That they've even turned the fountains off. We are leaving for Rome on Sept 13th. A week later we're heading for Tuscany, then Florence. Has anyone heard what the predictions are? Almost thinking we should cancel and go later in the fall. Advice?

I had the same question since I'm going to Rome next year at the end of June 2018.

Does anybody know what the predicted temperature in Rome will be on June 27, 2018?

I was wondering if I should cancel and go to Northern Alaska instead.

They haven't turned the monumental fountains off, like Trevi, but the small ones used to get drinkable water while walking around. Not even all of them according to the local sources.

You won't be able to refill your bottle for free, but is this a good reason to change your plans?

Think some fountains at the Vatican only are on limited hours ; there was talk about shutting down fountains in central Rome but that was voted down so never happened from what I was aware.

There has been a heat wave recently, yes but I believe more than issue was/is lack of rainfall than temperature.

If you can find a weather website or person that can give an accurate weather forecast more than 1 month in advance, please do share.

If you expected to be cold in Rome in mid Sept. you haven't planned well, if it were my trip I would be under the assumption that the weather this Sept in Rome will not be any different than the typical Sept in Rome the past 10 years.

I didn't have an expectation of being cold in Sept but did hope that by then temps would be tolerable - say around 80 - 85. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will cool down by then or at least at night.

I am in Rome right now and the heat during the day is exhsusting. 98 degrees and bright sunshine. My family has taken mid day breaks each day and come back to the hotel for afternoon to cool off and then we go back out at night when it's bearable. We haven't had any problems finding water fountains to fill our bottles up throughout the day.

With an 80-85 expectation for Sept I think the odds are good of that working out just fine.

You're asking for weather predictions for more than a month from now? Not possible. So my advice is not to sweat it (see what I did there?), and check a few days before you go.

Happy travels.

Do not cancel your plans! Go and you will have a wonderful time. As we all know, you can not predict the weather that far out. Have been in Tuscany several times in mid-Sept. and mid-Oct. and weather was beautiful and comfortable. Last time in Florence was mid-Oct 2014 and temps were in mid 80's and I am wearing capri's and my husband shorts & the locals were wearing scarves and coats! Have been in Rome several times in mid-Oct with beautiful weather and I kid-you-not--the locals were wearing parkas! Some with fur around the hoods:) They dress for the time of the year and not necessarily for the temps.

Roberto's prescient comments aside, it's a good thing that the Italians invented al fresco air conditioning. It's called the Negroni...

By the way, high temps in Rome today are 81. The heat is currently baking the living goulash out of Budapest at 97 degrees F.

We were in Rome this past week with 2 tweens. It was very hot, but you find the shade everywhere you can. Also bring empty water bottles they have the water fountains working. Also we stay at airb&bs that were great, we put water in freezer and carried in our small backpacks. We are in Florence now and past 2 days it is 80 degrees absolutely beautiful. However going back to 90 on Monday. We also have the cool towels and you wet them in the fountains those were the best thing we brought

I'm in Rome right now and yes it's hot, but I can say that Rome is more crowded now in this August heat than I've ever experienced it on my usual Autumn trips!

To the two gals at Trevi Fountain, I'm sorry I poked you but I couldn't back up any further. Anyway thanks for not clobbering me!

Besides Trevi, All the fountains at Piazza Navona are on and also at the Pantheon. BTW, the Piazza at the Pantheon was packed with people lined up to go inside but it moved very quickly and we all got in, a tad crowded in there but not too bad, I'm sure we lingered a little longer to enjoy its coolness! Be sure to use the shady roads as you exit the Piazzas, sure helps move you along.

Piazza Venezia also very busy, but it's so huge and spread out, you don't notice it that much, until you take the bus back to Termini, so packed but you're not that far from Termini even though it feels like it takes the long way around!

As for those fountains where you fill up your water bottles, the one over here at Piazza Asti 25 is on, but I can't speak for all the fountains! But I spend 0.19 Euro for a 1.5 liter Frizzante at TODIS supermercato! CONAD or COOP can't be that much more.

To me September in Rome is hot but I'd say not as hot as this. In fact September usually starts my travel in Italy. May also have some rainy days in September, a few years ago on September 19 in Firenze, we had a high wind and hail storm, hail the size of grapes, ankle deep in the streets, took 3 days for it all to melt even with the sun out! So I think September will be perfect for your trip to Rome, Tuscany and Florence.

I hope you have a great trip! I'm going end of October and praying that the drought doesn't decide to break then (selfish I know)... I have a pension for bringing rain when I am on vacation...even when the forecast says 0% chance of it! It is my first time to Italy...hoping for nice weather :)

I think from the comments on this thread and many others, we can surmise that because of the current popularity of Italian tourism coupled with a great dollar/Euro ratio, high season (June through August) is now 'overrun' season, and shoulder season (April/May, September/October) is now what high season used to be. Put some beastly hot days in there, and that's not a pleasant combination at all.

The regulars on this forum have known this was coming for awhile now, but some first-timers that don't do adequate research are in for a rude awakening, sweating in queues instead of their previously-idyllic views of visiting Italy. I understand some have to travel during that time, but they'll just have to understand the challenges upfront.

Doesn't matter to me--I'm traveling February/March, maybe early April, or November. Have done it twice that time of year and my enjoyment without heat or tourist hordes has been off the charts.

This was the only time we could go to Italy. Hearing about the crowds I think we will use this trip to explore away from the sights and then return in November in another year to see the sights popular with tourists. We'll see how it goes!

It will still be hot but probably not as hot as now. October and April, maybe beginning of May are the months to see Rome.
