Hello! We are visiting Italy at the end of the month and will start our trip in Rome, then rent a car and drive to San Gimignano as our base in Tuscany for a couple days. We’d like to do the RS Heart of Tuscany drive, but coming from Rome, it seems out of the way to go to his starting location. Wondering if anyone has done the drive starting and ending in a different location and if you were able to follow his directions successfully? Or should we back track and do the drive on a different day?

If you only want to do the drive, not stopping in any of the towns along the way then use https://www.viamichelin.com as your trip planner.
Start by doing town-town and printing them out to take with you. These maps will give you turn by turn directions, distance, speed limits and roundabout directions. Montepulciano-Pienza.
Pienza-Montalcino. Montalcino-Gaiole. Gaiole-Radda. Radda-Panzano. Panzano-Greve. Greve-San Gimignano. Having a good navigator who's not distracted by the scenery helps immensely on a first trip. This drive will take 2-3 hours. Know you'll at least stop for photos.
If you do want to stop, figure you can do 2 and possibly 3 towns a day. Siena will take a full day.
