We leave next week for Italy and this trip visiting 3 new cities to us--Mantova, Bologna and Milan.
Any suggestions for must see or better yet unknown/unusual sights would be greatly appreciated.
Any favorite restaurant suggestion for those cities?
Thanks in advance.
The statue of Neptune in Piazza Maggiore in Bologna has a peculiar optical illusion when seen from a specific spot. I learned that from my relatives in Bologna when they showed it to me while visiting there many years ago. Read about it below:

I didn't care for Bologna, but I loved the view from the top of the Torre Asinelli. Bologna has an intact medieval street plan, with the "bicycle wheel and spokes" design, and you can see this very clearly from the top of the tower.
I also loved my meals at Gigina http://www.trattoriagigina.it/ (outside of town, but an easy bus or taxi ride) and Gianni (no website, in the center). However, I was there about 15 years ago, and I don't know if they're still as good now as they were then. If I were going back, I'd certainly research them first. If you do want to go to either one, make reservations, particularly for Gianni.
