Having trouble finding a good Venice hotel

I am having trouble finding a good hotel in Venice. I've researched all of the ones listed in Rick Steves' Italy 2010, but either they are already booked for our late April visit, or they are not what we are looking for.

We'd like a clean, quiet hotel overlooking a canal (not the Grand Canal, just a minor one would do) that is 150-185 Euro per night. We'd like a private bathroom.

Can anyone recommend a place? I'd be most grateful.

Hi Anne,

We love Locanda Orseolo. It is small, family owned and run, lovely rooms, excellent breakfast included, near enough to San Marco but in a quiet back corridor overlooking Canal Orseolo. Check out their website. They often have really good specials going. We have stayed here 2 times and can't wait to return.

In March 2007 my husband and I stayed at the Hotel Ca' Formenta, which was a Rick Steves' recommendation at the time (don't think it is still in his Italy book, but not 100% sure). Our room overlooked a side canal, the location was great (a few minutes walk to San Marco), the front desk staff was friendly and helpful, and we paid €125/night (and would stay there again).

Might be worth checking out if you haven't already. Good luck!

Hi Anne,

We're staying in the Dorsoduro area at http://www.casarezzonico.it/ in March.

Seems lovely, in a quiet area, 135 Euros a night (but it's off season for us) and they've been very easy to communicate with. Great revews on Trip Advisor.

Good luck!

We have stayed at the Ca Dogaressa on two different occasions. It is on the Cannaregio Canal, easy walking distance from the train station. They have two Jr. Suites that overlook the canal, I don't think that the other rooms do. The Jr. Suites are very large & so are their bathrooms. It was spotless and the people are very friendly & helpful. Anywhere along this canal would be a good area. There are a few restaurants, a small grocery and a wine shop, also. There are water taxi stops and it gets quiet at night. www.CaDogaressa.com Have a great trip.

Hi Anne, This past july we stayed in the Dorsoduro area as well and loved it. We stayed at the hotel American Dinesen for about 185 euro p/night, but that was for a quad room during high season. April might be a less. The hotel was spotless and the staff went out of their way to be accomodating. It was also the best continental breakfast we had in Italy. Good luck!

We are booked at this place in June. I found good comments about it. It is near a major crossing to the tourist areas.

Private bath - much less expensive than your budget.
Look through tripadvisor.com for referrals.

We stayed in Pensione "La Calcina" (Ruskin's house)in Doroduro. Wonderful location on the Giudecca canal. We walked everywhere. The ferry building(Venezia line to Croatia) was nearby as was the Vaparetto stop. Charming canalside floating terrace for breakfast. Friendly staff. Our first room overlooked the canal and was small but comfortable. The second room on the first floor was quite large but no view. Excellent accomodations.I think we paid 180E in July-Aug.I would definitely stay there again.

On our last trip to Venice, we stayed at Casa Santa Maria Formosa, http://www.casaformosa.com/en/index.htm. It is close to Piazza San Marco, but a bit out of the tourist fray. The hotel is on a side canal, and some rooms overlook the canal - you'd have to check the rates for your travel dates. The Campo Santa Maria Formosa is right there, and is a nice area to sit, have a drink and people-watch.

We have stayed at the Belle Arte for our past two visits and love the hotel and the location. It is just off the Grand Canal at the Accademia Bridge.

Hello--we liked Al Piave--a small, family-run hotel in Costello, near campo Santa Maria Formosa. Super clean room, kind people, good breakfast. It's generally less if you pay cash.

Hi Anne,
I have read excellent reviews about the Al Ponte Antico, and we plan to stay there this spring ourselves.

Did you try Al Ponte Mocenigo? It is a little further from the main sites, but is a lovely hotel with a great staff and is really only a 10-15 minute walk to the Rialto bridge. I stayed there in 2008 and would definitely stay again.
