Having second thoughts re: Florence/Rome

My original plan was to stay 3 nights in Florence, then on a Friday, travel to Rome for 4 nights. I just made my reservations for a tour of the Vatican for Friday, and the latest tour available is 11:15. I was thinking that perhaps we should travel to Rome late in the day or evening on Thursday night. That way, we wouldn't be trying to leave Florence Friday morning rushing to Rome and hoping to get to the Vatican in time. I was able to book our hotel in Rome for the extra night, but somehow I am wondering if I will regret having that last night in Florence. Any other suggestions? I have heard that going to the Vatican on a Saturday or Monday would be a mistake. Thanks!

There is wisdom to what you have suggested and I would do it because I do not like to run things down to the last hour. My personal opinion is that you will not miss that evening in Florence. Florence is relatively small so a couple of good days does cover it well. It might be nice to have that evening but I would trade it quickly for the easier morning. Friday is a good choice. The weekends are always more crowded. Use Sunday to see the Appain Way,

It is a better option to spend the night before your Vatican tour in Rome. I love Italy but things don't always run as planned. Do not start your morning with an early start, hoping that the trains are running on time. You need to be well rested for a day at the Vatican so spend the night in Rome and have a leisurely morning.

Yeah, Florence is lovely, but not that special at night. Make the most of it and have a picnic supper on the train. Then you'll have plenty of time to settle in when you get to Rome and not be rushed. You might even have time for a short evening stroll after you check in. And a relaxing morning before the tour. I think you are right to avoid Monday at the museums. I went on a Monday in February and it was packed.
