The current issue of the National Geographic Traveler Magazine has a wonderful long article on Rome. And if you go to their web site (google) there is a list of free things to do in Rome. A must-read and loads of fabulous photos as well.

The article lists the Roman Forum as a free sight and as of March 2008 it is no longer free. It is part of a combo ticket with the Coliseum and the Palatine Hill.
