Have you been to Grosseto?

We're traveling to Switzerland & Italy in Sept. We're returning to some RS favorites and also want to add someplace new to us and more local/less touristy. Has anyone been to Grosseto? I already have our hotel reservation (Grand Hotel Bastiani) in the old city center for two nights, and they have bikes we can borrow. We speak about 20 words of Italian but are great at charades. : ) We'll be coming by train or bus from Siena and taking the train to Rome afterwards.

We spent two nights in Grosseto and enjoyed it very much. It's nicely laid back and the folks are quite friendly. As a regional center you'll probably find some events going on, it was a dance festival when we were there. We used the city as a base and made car trips out from there (to Pitigliano for example.)The museums and churches and monuments are interesting for sure, even if they are not at World Heritage levels.

The restaurant Il Canto di Gallo didn't measure up to Slow Food standards in our opinion. We did enjoy a restaurant called Ristorante La 16 (local cheeses, tortelli maremma, ragu di cinghiale).

Sorry, Jean, no personal experience to add, but I'm sure you'll enjoy getting a little further from the beaten path.
