What City would you eliminate on a tight itinerary. Venice, Florence or the Cinque Terra? We eliminated Venice. Just wanted some feedback. I might add we are coming from Murren Switzerland which makes Venice out of the way for us on the way to Rome. Which lead to eliminating Venice.
Very difficult de ision as all are wonderful in their own right. Hopefully,u can visit Venice in 5e cu5ure. It is an extraordinary place. Crowede or not it is magical.
Google Maps says the driving time from Murren to Monterosso to Florence is 8:55.
It says the driving time from Murren to Venice to Florence is 9:01.
So if you were driving, it would be about the same travel time. I'm guessing it's also about the same by train, more or less. So I wouldn't use that to determine which one to skip.
I'd most likely keep Venice myself, even though I love the Cinque Terre too. Venice is a much more unique place and historically significant and holds up better in the rain, if you don't have good weather. If you were an avid hiker and could assure good weather but not a peak summer visit, I might lean toward the Cinque Terre a little more
We are going in early June I might add. And I figured we will stop in Milan then Florence. That makes it less of a drag putting it on one big travel day. Idk we could still change it. Unless people tell me there is a huge difference between the 3 I’ll stick with it. Some say Venice is overrated but those might not be hardcore travelers.
What time of year is your trip?
Are you taking the train? Although it may appear from a map that the Cinque Terre are closer to the direct path between Murren and Rome, I think if you check the rail schedules you'll find that it doesn't take more time to go to Venice and on to Rome from that city. Depending on what time of day you travel, Venice might be faster, because you'll spend more time on express trains. You'll need to take regional trains to get to the Cinque Terre.
That doesn't mean you should drop C.T. rather than Venice; such decisions are always hard, and ultimately we all have to make our own choices.
Other than Rome where else in Italy are you going and how many days do you have for Italy and how many have you allocated to Rome?
Just as many people say the Cinque Terre is overrated as say Venice is - perhaps more. Both are crowded and touristy these days.
If you are not avid hikers, I'd choose Venice for sure.
We did both Venice and the CT 35 years ago back before the CT had become an overrun tourist trap. I would choose Venice; it is singular. There are lots of towns like the CT - although hiking the trails when there was not a single other tourist all day and exploring towns that didn't have souvenir shops or much sign of tourism was a bit of paradise now lost.
Keim, judging by all that mankind values, it's not even close: go to Venice.
We've been to Italy twice but it did not include Venice. That said, we are including Venice this year! Great tips on this forum to avoid the crowds.
Skip the Cinque Terre and go to Venice. Touristy or not, there is no place like it. We find it magical. Just walk around and immerse yourselves in the city. You will enjoy it.
I've been to Italy 3 times but have never been to the CT. If I were to go back again I would probably re-visit Venice before choosing the CT. That is a personal decision based on my interests and desires. It looks like you have made the decision already based on your interests and desires, and that's exactly as it should be. Personally, I don't think anyone should make the 'where should I go' decision based on someone else's choice. You asked for feedback so you'll get a lot of it. It may reinforce your decision to drop Venice or it may make you rethink your choice and maybe even change your itinerary. That will be up to you. Either way you should have a wonderful trip - you can't go wrong with either of these destinations.
I have been to Italy many times and would choose Venice over CT. Both are crowded but I felt the CT was highly overrated.
As Nancy indicated, you can't go wrong with either one. It just depends on your personal preferences. Both are very unique, picturesque, and crowded. When it come to having things to "do" rather than just "seeing" things, Venice offers a lot more, in my opinion.
Ok well based on the feedback we might change our minds and go with Venice after all! I thought it would be split but there seems to be a consensus that Venice would be the choice although allittle longer travel time. Thanks for the feedback! Anybody else’s thoughts are welcome too.
When I first scanned your post title, I thought maybe this was from Kim Jong-un...
Venice, Venice, Venice. The city is unique and very historical. Cinque Terre is nice, but not Venice.
Keim, not exactly a response to your question, but I would eliminate Milan. But, certainly keep Venice over Cinque Terre.
Thanks, this is why I love this site. I think Milan will be scratched and we’ll spend one less day somewhere else, and add Venice.
